Chili Pot (new restaurant)

by Ryan W » Wed Nov 11, 2009 10:07 pm

Does anyone have info about a new restaurant coming to town called Chili Pot? For the last couple of weeks there has been an ad in the LEO:

NEW RESTAURANT OPENING! Hiring all positions including management. Email work and salary history as well as availability to cathy.reid@chilipot.com

The Chilipot.com website just shows as a parked page so there's no info there. Anyone have any clue about this one? -- Ryan

I googled it, and there is a Mexican and chili place in Cincy called "The Chili Pot." Well, actually, there WAS one...I called the number and it's disconnected. I'm surprised they don't give more information in the ad!

And I found this:

Well, we know who the construction company is, but that's not what we want to know!

I'm sure someone on here will know more about this. I'd say the smart money is either on Annemarie, because she tends to find things out quickly and efficiently, or Robin for obvious reasons. Any other takers?

I'm clue-impaired at this point, but I can offer historical context: Other than Old Walnut Chile Parlor, one of Louisville's first "Mexican" restaurants was The Chile Bowl, which was right across Broadway from the old downtown Post Office (now the Federal Building). It was a true greasy spoon, with a poorly drawn sombrero as its logo, and I really felt like I was getting a message when the managing editor of The Louisville Times took me over there for a job interview over lunch. Happily, I got the job anyway, and the rest, as they say, is history. Paul, this incident probably occurred before you were born.

Hi! I'm Cathy Reid, the owner of the Chili Pot. Thanks so much for your interest. Would have replied sooner, just learned of this site.
No, we are not a chain. This is my first venture. We specialize in a wide variety of gourmet Chilis, including sirloin steak chili, green pork chili, white chicken chili, and Louisville chili, using the freshest ingredients available, even our chili powder is made from scratch! We also feature Nathan's hotdogs, gourmet chicken salad, that is also made in house by our executive chef, Lucas Fleitz. A wide variety of craft beers and plenty of flat screens in high definition just goes good with chili.

We are going on Monday night (weekly trip for son to go to Boy Scouts), we will be there around 7:00 PM. We have worn out Okolona for decent food, hope to add this to the rotation.
Here is their Urban Spoon listing:

Once again, thank you so much for your interest! I must say that, although I have been in the restaurant business for some 30 odd years, boy, this is way different! Really have learned how much I don't know. Due to contractors, vendors, etc., many time delays in opening. But so far our approval ratings have been fabulous!
We opened Dec. 20th. Our hours are Sun. - Thurs. 11:00 - 10:00 and Fri. - Sat. 11:00 - 11:00. We are located at 8118 Preston Hwy., which is about 2 blocks south of the Outer Loop ( site of the old Llloyd's Florist). Love large parties and soon, as soon as I am confident in the current processes, we will be offering catering as well.
Please come and see me! I live here! Hee Hee.

Welcome to the forum Cathy. This forum can be an extremely friendly place. "Local" establishments receive an especially warm welcome, particularly if you've got good food and good service. With 30 years in the business, no doubt you've "been there - done that".

Do you have a website or facebook page? I would love to check out the menu.

It's not their website, but it has the menu listed. I assume prices are current since the recently opened.

I stopped by today and picked up both the Green Pork Chili and some of the Sirloin chili. Both were great but the Green Pork chili stands out - it's delicious!! I went through the drive-thru but will try and make it back soon to dine inside.

Feel free to make some anytime.... :P

Vegetarians are a minority and for most establishments aren't the clients paying the bills. Any restaurant can survive without catering to vegetarians but the opposite is not true.

I wouldn't want to extend that line of thinking to protected minorities suffering a history of oppression or anything, but I think you've got a point, Brian. I think it's good business for Restaurant Row eateries to keep one or more good, creative meatless entrees on the menu, but ethic spots and cheap-eats dining rooms with a simpler mission may not find that practical.

Frankly, I'm a carnivore with considerable sympathy for the vegetarian outlook. I could be a vegetarian (not a vegan, which makes no logical sense) for ethical reasons primarily, also health. We've made the decision to compromise by choosing for home use only locavore natural meat and poultry and sustainable fish in an omnivirous diet that includes many meat-free days.

If I ever got out of the food writing business, Mary and I could easily become true vegetarians (no exceptions, eat nothing that has a mommy, nothing that has a face). But I'd like to think that I wouldn't go around complaining about it if a specific restaurant didn't choose to write its menu to accommodate me.
