Where to get good Greek food

by Thomas Updike » Fri Nov 06, 2009 5:30 pm

Earlier in my life I traveled through Greece and as much as I brought back an appreciation for the sights and the history, I brought back a lifelong love of the food.
I've yet however to find a place in Louisville that serves good authentic Greek food.
My latest attempt was at It's All GreeK To Me on Frankfort Ave. Let me forward a quip, Greek food is all Greek to the staff at IAGTM.
It was a cold day last week when I ordered and only after paying was I told that there is no indoor seating, the tables and chairs had convinced me otherwise. So I waited, went outside, and sat at one of the three available sidewalk tables. The food was brought to me in plastic deli containers which had been melted by being placed in the microwave (microwave, really!) for too long. So, I got past that and noticed that no silverware had been brought with my order. I asked the more than somewhat unpleasant man who had brought me my food, a hulking bald fellow who was proud to claim his Greek descent, who had little to say and probably couldn't have cracked a smile had Zeus himself commanded it, for some silverware and he told me flatly that there was some inside. No offer followed from him to retrieve said silverware for me so I got up, left my food, went inside and picked up, big surprise, a plastic fork.
As for my food, the gyro had so much sauce, with so much garlic, that even though I had quite an appetite, I couldn't finish it. The bean soup was, all soup, few beans, and seemed to have no sort of seasoning at all.
I left, sorry that I had wasted my effort and still wondering where in Louisville I might find my beloved Greek food. Anyone care to offer any suggestions?

If it's Gyro you are looking for, try ZAYTUN on Bardstown Rd (Woodbourne Ave) It's chock full of meat, and delicious!

I like The Grape Leaf. It is a Mediterranean style restaurant, but has some good Greek dishes.

There really isn't a truly Greek restaurant in Louisville. My father-in-law is Greek. So we get our Greek food fix whenever they invite us to dinner. He usually cooks. I've begged them (only half jokingly) to open a restaurant. Otherwise, The Greek Orthodox Church puts on a Greek Festival each year. That's about it. You could join the church and hope to be invited to some potlucks! I'm actually making mousakka next weekend for a girls night. It takes about 4 hours from start to finish...but worth it. Opa!

Er hello, what about A.J's Gyro Cafe? You all still can't get over the Sherman Minton hey? We serve excellent gyros (people have said they are the best they have ever had) saganaki, mousaka, falafels, greek style tenderloins (Marty Rosen's of CJ's fave), feta and olives, baklava, tzatzkik, spanakopita, dolmades, and an amazing meze plate - pic attached.

Allison, I didn't see the meze plate or moussaka listed on the Highlander Point menu. Is it just in need of updating, or do you all serve it at another location? If I can get moussaka, etc. at Highlander Point, I'll be there tomorrow! (I'm a former Hoosier...it's not that scary.)

if you go back on the website and go to the menu for Floyd's Creek, you'll then see a button up top for "AJ'S Greek Floyds Creek Menu" and all the good greek listings are on there. I had to look around for awhile cause the Gyros weren't on the first menu and it is a gyro place...I figured it was just a standard re-copied menu bar!

Mousaka is on the menu btw :)

Allison, that plate looks amazing! If it looks that good in person, then it's all good.
I will try to get there this weekend for sure! Not to mention I love the Knobs, and the weather is going to be gorgeous!

Holly, My husband does the website and he says it is self explanatory, but obviously it isnt' as you are not the first person who couldn't find the second page with the greek food on it!!! He is switching it around tonight, so the first page you come to when you click on Floyds Knobs is the greek menu. Look forward to seeing you soon.

Heather, we sold out of souvlakis (the pork kebabs) tonight doing meze plates and souvlaki plates. However, do not fear because I can make them out of my greek pork tenderloins which are actually more tender. So, please do come on over.

Thanks Allison, I stopped in at A.J.'s and you're right the gyros are incredible. I urge anyone who's looking for delicious Greek food to stop in and give it a try, and please, stay away from It's All Greek to Me, terrible food, terrible experience, extremely unfriendly people, A.J.'s is the place.

I wholeheartedly agree,All Greek to Me was one of the worst gyros Ive had in awhile. Thomas,if you have not tried Bosna-Mak,JnR Bakery,Al Watan or Zaytun they all make some top notch gyros. Granted they are not Greek, but it doesn't stop them from cranking out some stellar gyros.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.
