Made it!

by Doug W » Thu Mar 01, 2007 2:34 pm

I am not very adept at navigating the web, and I was able to find my way and register in a matter of minutes. I have seen this format before and I think it will make it very easy to find and keep track of topics of interest.

Works for me!

I'm here. This is the same format I use on another discussion group, so I'm fine with this. :D

never fear!

I'm telling ALL my friends about this place.

Food is my third favorite subject to talk about, so I'll probably be posting just to watch myself type half the time.

Thanks Robin

Thanks for giving everyone the opportunity to test drive the new format. I think it will be great and I see lots of positive comments so far.

I am having problems with the avatar image. I have tried repeatedly to upload an image and I have set it to the 80 x 80 pixel size and less than 6 kb and it still says that it is too large. I see lots of other people with personalized avatars and would really like to put one on my profile. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

all aside...

by Ethan Ray » Fri Mar 02, 2007 4:12 am

I'm glad to see that aside from certain people having problem with their employers IT departments blocking the site... that most people are happy and actually familiar with this format.

my question is this:
Robin, is it possible for you to boost the max size allowed for the avatar images?
6kb is tiny as all hell... I've been playing with an image in photoshop cs2, converting it to grayscale, dropping all color data, and 50x80 pixels... and i can't even get it close.

i realize this may affect the bandwidth usage that's allocated, and the like...
but aside from using super small gif files... it's likely for most people to will have a hard time trying to resize an actual photo to fit into the required constraints.

I put vegetables in your desserts, white chocolate with your fish and other nonsense stuff that you think shouldn't make sense, but coax the nonsense into something that makes complete sense in your mouth. Just open your mind, mouth and eat.

Ethan, I won't like and say I "can't," but for reasons of bandwidth and esthetics, I'm honestly not inclined to - or at least not by much. The avatars are really just intended as cool little bits of color, like icons, and the size limit we're using here is the same one we use on the wine and food forums without any complaints. I've seen some forums that allow large avatars, and just don't like the looks of 'em much.

Ethan, have you tried to save it as a jpeg with maximum compression? Then you can convert it to any other file type you wish. This won't always get a file down to 6k or less, but it may help.

Hello everyone. I'll just put in another "congrats" on the new forum format. I'm hoping it'll also be more readable on my PDA, which didn't like frames all that much.

best...aa.
