Benefit at Bobby J's

by Jon K » Fri Jun 01, 2007 7:29 am

Thank you Robin for allowing me to post this.

Tomorrow night there will be a benefit for Louisville's own Richard "Kush" Griffith at the new Bobby J's. Kush is one of Louisville's most successful musicians having played trumpet on all of James Brown's greatest hits and was the heart of the horn section for Parliament/Funkadelic. (Kush's website Kushsites.com). Joining Kush will be the great Maceo Parker. Parker is a sax legend and has played with everyone from James Brown to George Clinton to Prince to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Bobby J's food and this music should be a great combination.

New Bobby J's = Old Oscar Brown's location at Floyd and Market. Concert is 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tix at the door.

TP:
Kush's website refers to some serious medical problems including spinal stenosis that leaves him almost immobile, but still playing horn.

$10!! Outrageous.

Here is the full info from the LEO Calendar:
Kush Griffith is best known for his musical odyssey with Parliament Funkadelic and the late, great James Brown. A couple of pals are gonna host a benefit for him at 8 p.m. Saturday at Bobby J’s (252 E. Market St., 568-5555). Cost is $10.

Special guests are making the trip for this event, including Maceo and Melvin Parker. Rounding out the show will be Project Redbook, Brigid Kaelin, Birdhouse and the Leisure Thieves. DJs Matt Anthony and Woody Chancey of WFPK-FM will spin funk records between bands and after the show.

Very Cool....

I've seen Maceo in concert with Prince several times...he's pretty amazing. If I get out early enough, I'll head down there to get a few Prince CD's signed!

Be well,

What an incredible show!!! I am so sad that I will miss it. We are going to our friend's 33 1/3 party, which is a play on age and record spinning. Sure would love to be at 2 places at once on this night! Also, would love to hear how Bobby J's new place is shakin out. Posts on this would be appreciated, especially since I worked for him once upon a time, at the original Bobby J's on Frankfort. Have fun, and be careful! : o)

Tonight

by Jon K » Sat Jun 02, 2007 11:48 am

I'm going to bump this one back up the board because it is tonight. Also wanted to let everyone know that while nothing is certain, George Clinton has shown up unannounced at some of the other benefits for Kush.

Let's just make it a "sticky" and paste it on top for the rest of the day.

Kush seemed to make it clear at the end of his performance that this was his last gig. We should all go out sounding as good as he did.
