Cooking Contests

by Kim H » Thu May 31, 2007 8:52 pm

I've never done this before, partly because I'm rather protective of my recipes, but am thinking about getting into the cooking contest circuit, or at least trying my hand at it. Does anyone have a link for local/regional cooking contests or cook offs? Also, would this be too 'off topic' to put on the main page? (Robin?)

Kim, I'm sorry I don't know of many such contests offhand - I do judge the annual chili competition of the Louisville Ski Club most years, but I believe you have to be a club member to enter.

Of course you're welcome to post this on the main forum! The sections are more for convenience than any kind of strict rule. :) I can move this thread over if you'd like me to, leaving a reference to it in this section. Let me know if you'd like me to do that.

Kim:
Trying googling "cooking contests". I think there's a website called food reference that lists a whole bunch of contests. There are tons that are recurring monthly, some yearly like Southern Living and Pillsbury. There are huge contests sponsered by the pork and beef industries and tons sponsered by various other companies. Check out the Ky State Fair special cooking contests to get your feet wet. All of this can be done on the internet. Good luck - maybe we'll run into each other out there, I've been doing them for 20 years now. Remember - it's more about recipe development than execution and the contests often have interesting rules and regulations. Also, 99% of them disqualify you if any portion of your income is derived from the food industry (ie: chef, home economist, dietician, etc)

Well, try your hand at the Kentucky State Fair!!! There are plenty of options out there besides cakes, pies and cookies...I've wanted to enter myself in the pizza category, but every year it seems my vacation or something else is going on to keep me away from trying to get that blue ribbon. Also, I participate in the Phoenix Hill Chili Cookoff yearly(for the past seven)and it is always a very good time. Perhaps another event this fall, I have suggested to Chef Dave at Bistro New Albany to sponsor a Chicken And Dumplin' Cookoff the same week-end as the Harvest Homecoming as well...Not quite in the planning stages yet, but I think we can make it happen!!!!

Kim:
I went back and reread my earlier post and realized that I said "remember it's mostly about recipe development", what I meant by that is that the "online" or "send us your favorite recipe" type contest is like that. Just to get to the finals - where there are physical cookoffs - you have to be quite astute at correctly writing a recipe. That way, the judges doing the prequalifications - who are only reading recipes - will think yours sounds soooo good, it has to be tried. Next, the recipes are made in test kitchens. If it doesn't work for someone who has never made it before, you're out! Finally, the finalists get to cook at the last "showdown"!
It can be worth the effort though, Pillsbury Bake Off has a $1,000,000 first prize!
On a much smaller scale, but just as fun is the Ky State Fair. I have "friends" I only see once a year at the fair - where we compete against each other in the special contests! It's great fun!

if you have a large family like I do, just start some sort of cooking contest for fun. We have an annual rib off in my family. It's actually gotten quite large. We have judges come in, and everything. ;) We have lots of fun, lots of food, lots of beer...and it's a good way to hone your skills...just a thought. ;)

I'm still looking forward to the Chicken and Dumplin' cookoff, Dan. Let me know if I can help out and get this off the ground.....
