India Palace at Hurstbourne is gone

by Robin Garr » Fri Oct 30, 2009 7:41 am

Rumors flew last week, and Wednesday the "Closed" sign appeared on the door. It's a shame ... despite the creaky upstairs floor that scared some people, I always liked this local institution, particularly after it moved from a grubby section of Bardstown Road to the old New Orleans House quarters on US 60 near Hurstbourne.

Perhaps too much competition with two other good Indian spots (Shalimar and Bombay Grill) in close proximity?

The newer Southern Indiana branch of India Palace remains open.

It's a shame. I think the competition is it...I have not been to India Palace since I started eatting at Bombay Grill and Dakshin. It's a case of too much of a good thing I guess.

I went there a couple of times and thought thought the food was not as good as Shalimar or Dakshin.
The floor shaking when anyone was walking around was a little unsettling; as well as the whole place had that old dingy feel, leftover from boatloads of fried seafood.
Not that it was bad, but It just wasn't a great atmosphere compared to it's close by competiters.
What ever goes in that location next, I hope the owners have the capitol to give the place a complete overhaul. That's one of the reasons I think that Frank's Steakhouse across the street failed as well. The food while pretty good, was served in a pretty grubby dining room that was in bad need of renovation.

Yeah, that location in Indiana closed a loooong time ago. I just didn't remember it being the India Palace folks. My memory is failing lately, it seems.

Chicken Masala, and some of that wonderful peas and cheese in the creamy sauce (I can't recall the name off the top of my head).

I loved the place because it was practally across the street from me. And the people were so friendly. I must admit, I hadn't been back since my hospital stay and had been thinking about it however.

Oh, well. Guess I will default to one of the Hurstbourne ones......or Dakshin..... :?

Went there once. I guess that tells you enough. Not bad, but it is off my beaten path. Sorry to hear it is gone.

I still haven't been to Dakshin! Thinking about a date night there soon. How late are they open? Good for a date?

I'm pretty sure the building was finally sold. Hope the next people fix the floor, though knocking it down is probably more cost effective. We have been going to Bombay instead-- their buffet is one of my favorites that is close. Still sad to see another place close. :(

The buffet at Bombay is excellent, especially on the weekends when they spice it for the Indian crowd. I'm sad to see India Palace close, but its really hard to compete with either Bombay or Dak Shin.

Not sure how late their open, but I would definitely recommend them for a date. While I prefer the buffet at Bombay Grill over Dak Shin's, the ambiance at Dak Shin is definitely better for a date. The lights are dimmer, and the seating feels a little more private.

You HAVE to go! When you do, do yourself a favor and get an order of either the chili cauliflower or the chili mushrooms. So incredibly spicy and good!
