Downtown Ethnic Lunch Options - One More Down

by Carole C » Thu Oct 29, 2009 1:23 pm

Signs up at Sala Thai (on Main St.) report that tomorrow, Oct. 30, is its last day. I enjoyed a delicious Massaman Curry off the menu in honor of the occasion.

I'm theorizing that ethnic places (and I don't really count Mexican, Chinese and even sushi as ethnic here) have a particularly difficult time with the economics of serving mainly a business lunch crowd. Other recent casualties include Vic Ivan, the little cafe on 1st St. that served Ethiopian food (but the proprietors do operate the cafeteria at the Presbyterian Center and serve their ethnic food on Thursdays) and Blue Nile Ethiopian, among others. Of course there was Cafe Kilimanjaro. There hasn't been any Indian food downtown for a long time, except the little store on the corner of Market and Fifth that served a few dishes out of crockpots on Tuesday but discontinued earlier this year (it was very good but little-known).

So, in your quest to keep patronizing establishments that might be struggling, please make a particular special effort to enjoy lunch at gems like Safier, Road to Morocco and Omar Fast Food. And if anyone knows of any well-kept secret ethnic lunch places, let us hear about them.

Don't forget Saffron's! Bendoya Sushi ... and doesn't Pesto's at Fifth and Chestnut have some Iranian dishes?

Road To Morrocco is having a tough time. Please support! Eddie is really super nice, but is definitely struggling. It's a hard location! The food is very good and very reasonably priced. He is selling off his gift items, so right now would be a great time to have lunch or dinner and pick up some unusual Christmas gifts!
Also, The Bunbury Theatre is struggling right now also. I volunteered there 3 time durning this play (That Darn Plot - very funny!) and there were no more than 20 in the audience each night! SAD! It runs through Sun and ix are only $20 for gen adm and $17 for seniors and students. Great deal!

PS: I LOVE Safir! You get a ton of food at a great price! Rehan and his staff are doing a wonderful job.

I'll second Road to Morroco as being a good place to eat. Friendly service and attention. Definately try it if you can.

Mr Z's at Second or Third and Breck had some decent Bosnian lunch items along with the down-home blue-plate specials, but we noticed that it looked closed when we went by there the other day. The owners bought the Cottage Cafe, and I hope this doesn't mean that they shuttered the place downtown.

There's Safier's on Fourth just north of Broadway for Near Eastern cuisine, and a little Italian/pizzeria place a few doors north of that. And I believe Pesto's at Fifth and Chestnut throws some Persian stuff on the down-home menu, although I'm not sure of that at lunchtime.

It's my impression that the entire building that housed Mr. Z's has been closed for remodeling for some time. Not sure if there are any plans to reopen, unfortunately.

Pestos is an unusual place. It serves mainly Italian at lunch. Quick in and quick out as most places have to do downtown. At night on Friday and Saturday (last that I knew) they serve Italian and a long list of Persian/Iranian dishes. I have only been at night once quite a long time ago.

The owner (Iranian, I think) is pretty much a contemporary of Magid and Manoosh who had a place just a couple doors from Pestos. I would be surprised if he was not an alumni of Grisantis which would explain the Italian.

Robin, I am really surprised that you don't seem to have a review of an ethnic place like this that has been around for 15/20 years, although I believe they were just a lunch place for a long time.

Yeah, I worked near there for a long time. Frankly, I haven't ever gotten around to reviewing them in recent years mostly out of mercy, although that Friday and Saturday night Iranian deal might be worth checking out.

Are we too late? According to Business First, Road to Morocco is closing its shop and the restaurant is "likely" to follow: http://louisville.bizjournals.com/louis ... lumn2.html
If it's not too late, get over there and eat something this week!
