Obnoxious Diners

by Michelle R. » Thu Oct 29, 2009 9:21 am

My hubby and I went to Red Pepper Chinese last night. The food was AMAZING (Twice Cooked Pork, Chinese Style. It was more like Twice Cooked Bacon. Yum!), but there were some completely obnoxious people seated several tables over. They complained about EVERYTHING, and were borderline abusive to the staff. I almost said something to them, but decided against it. So, here's my question...what do you generally do when you witness another diner (or diners) being nasty to restaurant staff?

I usually comment to the wait staff, "Looks like a tough table over there," and tip extra.

We were extra nice, and left a good tip. It just irked me that someone would act that way. They were just awful. Rude, obnoxious, and just very loud. We could hear every nasty word they said.

Well, that depends.

I've done everything from moving tables to tell the person they are acting like a complete idiot in public.

So, it would REALLY depend on the circumstance.

Let me just say, the women working there were very kind, professional, and accommodating, because I don't think I'd have tolerated that kind of treatment, had it been me.

Plus, my husband and I just saw the movie "Waiting..." so my imagination was running wild with what was happening to their food back there!

I think someone here said that movie, Waiting , should be required for all people; especially those that have not worked in the Feed Service Industry.

It was definitely an eye-opening experience. Funny as hell, too!

Oh these people were just OBNOXIOUS. They complained about EVERYTHING. Their food was cold (their food came out less than 5 minutes before ours, and ours was HOT), the plates were cold, they wanted them warmed up, the waitress supposedly "bareface lied" to their faces about whether or not the chef had been replaced, then began badmouthing the restaurant staff while they were in the back, trying to "fix" their order, then these lovely human beings decided to opine, VERY LOUDLY, ABOUT OBAMA'S HEALTHCARE PLAN!! They were SO loud, my husband and I could not carry on a conversation. They were all the way across the restaurant, and it sounded like they were sitting on our laps. If it had been my establishment, I 'd have tossed them out on their ears. As we left, I made a loud statement of my own, about obnoxious blowhards who like to hear themselves talk. I'd like to think they heard me.

My suspicion is that trans fats have impaired blood flow to the area of their brain that whispers "Don't be an Asshat".

OK, those of you who know me know that I can be very patient. However, when it comes to small children running amuck in a restaruant and customers with very bad manners, I draw the line. MIchelle, my dear, you were far too kind. I would have not hesitated one bit to blast them a new one!

Yes. They were definitely asshats, and the women who were working there could not have been kinder to them.

about ten years ago we ate at Outback in Clarksville, the family at the table next to ours had a bad experience, from what I recall their food took to long, and when it came out, they didn't want it anymore, the father after tearing the server and manager a new one slams his napkin down and proclamied "We Shant Return" I busted out laughing as did many other dinners, the family stormed out humilated, and everyone had a pretty good time making fun of the guy for the rest of the night..I shant have any wine, I shant have a blooming onion, it's always easy to spot someone who has never worked in the business.

I just don't undertand why people treat people who prepare their food that way. I try to live by the Golden Rule, and treat people with respect. Especially people who prepare my food in a back room, out of my sight. After seeing "Waiting" I will be even more mindful of the Golden Rule, especially when it comes to folks working in a restaurant!
