Viva La Diva! MERF's First all female music fundraiser!!

by Linda C » Wed Oct 28, 2009 10:38 pm

Thank you Robin for letting me post this. MERF (Musician's Emergency Relief Fund, was started by Marvin Maxwell in the late 70's. Many local musicians who have no benefits or health insurance have been helped by this amazing fund. Each year, there are MERF concerts to raise funds for those in need. This November, our favorite club, Jim Porter's, is hosting an event named "Viva la Diva" . Many outstanding female musicians, young and old, will be providing entertainment for this worthy cause. This is the first event EVER for all female musicians. Here is the info from the web site.

Viva La Diva!
Sunday, November 15 2009, 5:00pm - 11:00pm Viva La Diva! concert at Jim Porter's Good Time Emporium. I encourage restaurant owners to listen and talk to these performers. There are so many "jazz" performances and luncheons that are staged here, but there are so many alternative music acts which would be so much more desirable in many locales.

I don't play much "jazz" at all, and no progressive jazz. I wholeheartily agree with you.

Howdy Will! I am still up at this crazy hour. I have been rehearsing and am excited about the event. I respect jazz artists, but I think many people don't appreciate progressive jazz at all. It has no discernable beat, there are no lyrics, and there are no memories associated with the music. Tomorrow night, you will hear women performing old, new, and original songs. Some of us have graced the stages in this city for over thirty years.

I encourage restaurant and bar owners to come out and listen and take some business cards home. There are many women who have Cds and LARGE followings.

"No discernible beat" of jazz. Too funny! As far as no lyrics, I understand that some people want to hear the same thing over and over the rest of their lives, the same exact way. (I guess that's the "memories" part) I did like "Most Wanted". They sounded better than 99% of the bands that play at Porter's.
I hope that some money was raised for a good cause.
