South End's Americana Festival this weekend at new location

by Robin Garr » Wed May 30, 2007 3:27 pm

This has always been fun in the past. I'm not sure that taking it away from the Iroquois Manor shopping center to a more out of the way apartment complex is the best idea I've ever heard of, but this should still be worth a visit:

A world of goodies at the Americana Festival

ValuMarket and Louisville Metro Human Services will sponsor the 17th Annual Americana World Festival, which begins with a Caribbean concert on Friday, June 1, from 7-9 p.m., and continues with music, dancing, Latino, African, Bosnian and Vietnamese exhibits and performances and a variety of ethnic foods on Saturday, June 2, from 2-10 p.m.

It moves this year to the grounds of the Americana Community Center, 4801 Southside Drive. The festival is free and family-oriented, which means, organizers say, don't bring your booze to town, boys. For directions and more information, visit http://www.amecomcen.org or call 366-7813.

I can't anywhere on the website that you posted that it is an apt complex, where'd you get that?

It says this on the website under the directions link:
former Holy Rosary Academy building.

Yes, the Community Center is the former School building.

The Americana Apartments have long been famous as having one of the largest immigrant populations concentrated in one area in Louisville, especially Asians but lately those from the African continent and others, too. The guy who runs the community center is wonderful - I'm sure he'll do his best to make it a nice event.

While not quite as convenient a venue, it does make sense as this Community Center is the main reason why this part of town is home to such a diverse and burgeoning ethnic immigrant population.

I'll be there.

...better leave those swords at home or they won't let you in! Hope to see you there.

Okay, poor wording on my part. It's surrounded by the Americana Apartments, where service agencies place a large number of refugee families. It's more of a residential area than the shopping center used in the past.

Sounds like fun... and it's in my part of town!
