Gyros and fry challenge

by Alison Hanover » Sat Oct 24, 2009 8:54 pm

OK Guys, I am going out on a limb here. I challenge you to come to A.J.'s Gyro Cafe and have a gyros and frys. If you don't think it is the best gyros you have ever had and the best frys, then you don't have to pay. That is right tipota as they say in Greece.

Hotbytes holds a lot of weight and I can't think of a better way of getting the word out. Once you have been I guarantee you will be back. We couldn't have sold 28,270 of them without them being great!!

So come on guys and girls, get over the Sherman Minton to exit 119.

Are you open everyday, Alison? What are your hours of operation for the Highlander Point location? I have a rare Tuesday off coming up and love gyros, so that sounds like a match to me!

Ed, Yes, we are open everyday. Tuesdays 11am - 9pm. I will be here until 4pm. If you come after that ask for Brad, he will see you right. Now, I don't want you to lie just to get a free gyros lol, I want your honest opinion.

Even if your gyros are terrible (which I'm sure they aren't) I would smile, pay my bill, thank you and then just head back across the river. But New Albany and surrounding environs has been good eats everytime I wander over with La Rosita, Bank Street and the late, great Bistro New Albany leading the way. Looking forward to good saganaki and gyros to scratch the itch! Easier to head over the bridge than to get to Tarpon Springs, Fl. See ya soon.

I will await your after saganaki and gyros post with baited breath. If AJ's warrants your approval, I think this might be a great place for an offline.

Allison..I have a weird question for you. I used to go to a gyro place in Tucson that served this pink creamy dipping sauce w/ their fries. I could never find out what it was. Do you know what it could possibly be or if this is something commonly seen in mediterranian places?

It could have been taramasalta, which I believe is the roe from either cod or carp, mixed with either mashed potatoe or bread and lemon juice, olive oil and vinegar. sometimes pink food coloring is added to make it pinker. I am betting that is what it was, and sorry, no we don't do it. lol

Anne and I stopped in yesterday for a couple gyros. Quick trip over the bridge, easy to find in an otherwise confusing mall layout, look for the big neon pink sign on a "satellite" mall building. While we got ours to go,the store is open, airy, very clean and bright, a couple of tv screens showing various scenes of Greece. Very friendly and efficient service. We only drove a short distance away to eat our gyros so they were still very hot with perfectly prepared pitas. So often you find oily under cooked or worse dried out stale pitas at so many gyros joints. These were great. The ratio of tomatoes(which were good for out of season) and onions to meat was just right. The tzatziki was fresh and bright although I would have preferred a heavier hand on the garlic, but thats just me. My only real gripe is the use of Kronos "portion control" presliced gyros meat strips. I prefer my gyros meat cut off the kronos "kone" or the harder to find stack of lamb/beef on a spear. Overall a good trip that was well worth the short trip across the bridge. I think it would be pretty easy to include a stop at Bank Street for a pint on your way back to town.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

I still say that the Gyro is the Greek answer to fried Bologna, but I love 'em.

Well I made it over to AJ's Gyro Cafe today. As I entered i was promptly greeted by the server with "welcome to AJ's!" She told me to sit where ever I care to, then brought me a menu and some utensils. I ordered iced tea to drink along with a Gyro and Fries.

I asked the server is Allison was there to leave the menu so I could look at other things and read the story of how AJ's came to be. Allison was not in, but the server promised to tell her I had been in.

I had remembered the place from when it was the Rock N Roll cafe. They have made changes, prmarily many pictures of Greece and of course Gyro's!

My meal came out and much to my surprise it looked just as it had in the picture Allison posted on Hotbytes! The Gyro was excellent. The meat (lamb/beef) was moist not dried out like some places. I really liked the Tzatziki sauce, smooth yogurt flavor with pieces of cucumber. The onions and tomatoes were diced. I sometime do not care for onions on my gyro if it is over powering. The lettuce with crisp green leaf. I was most impressed with the fries. They cut them in house and they really are home made fries. (If it were me I would have seasoned them)

As I had finished Allison did come in and we got to talk for a few minutes. She is headed to San Diego tomorrow!

If you haven't taken Allison up on her challenge, you should it is worth the drive. I do want to try to British Brunch, but not sure I can make 12/6.

All in all a great lunch. $10.17 with tax.

Thanks Allison for the great food and hospitality. Travel safe and Happpy Thanksgiving!
Kurt
