Dinner at Potstickers

by Michael Hargrove » Mon Oct 19, 2009 7:53 pm

Had dinner at Potstickers this evening. While the price was right, there were some things that were major disappointments. Since this was our first time at the restaurant, the young man at the counter walked us through “how to” order. Tara and I split a double noodle bowl with pork, ginger and soy. We were offered our choice of garnishes, but we chose to stick with the house preparation. We also ordered the beef & ginger and the chicken & sesame potstickers.

The pork in the noodle bowl had excellent flavor, was very tender and was well seasoned. Sadly, the noodles had no texture, the avocados were brown, the mint was bruised and there was no cilantro. In my opinion, this dish was missing a broth of some sort.

The potstickers, the place’s namesake, were not good at all. They were not fresh; they were pre-made and in a warmer. The texture of the dumpling was leathery and in some cases burnt. The fillings lacked seasoning and overall flavor. The sauces were good, but could not cover up the lack of quality.

I hope these are just new restaurant hiccups because I really want to like this place. The concept is fantastic and the location is perfect. I would like to see better quality coming from a place associated with a chef of such high caliber as Edward Lee.

Now, I’m off my soapbox…

Had the EXACT same type of experience last week for lunch. I had high hopes and the experience was pretty forgettable. The potstickers were very crunchy on the edge, so much so that I couldn't bite through and had to cut out the center part. The miso chicken noodle bowl I got was just so/so.

I'll give them another try in a few weeks and hope that the potstickers are better - it has potential if they can adjust a few things.

I had a similar experience last Thursday. The pork sandwich was pretty good but the noodles were real soggy and the chicken "parts" did not appear to be of the best quality imo. The pot stickers were as described in the previous post. I expected better quite frankly and was disappointed.

Yup - same experience. I was very, very excited about this concept but found execution to be subpar.

The outside edge of my potstickers were hard to the point of inedible (I actually threw away 1/2 my order). I'm pretty sure I saw something somewhere that said the potsticker would be "made to order" but they definitely came out of a warmer and were the worse for it.

Could have been a regular go-to place for me as it is on my way home, but I probably won't go at all back unless I hear some raves from the forum or other friends.

Unfortunately, this all echos my friend's reaction, which I posted a week or so ago.

Brad Keeton wrote:Haven't tried it myself, but a colleague did on Sunday night. Her take was that it was so so, but the negatives seemed to be working the kinks out of just opening. She said her potstickers were burned on one side and nearly raw on the other. When she pointed this out to someone, the person agreed but made no offer to replace them. She also commented on her surprise of no rice being available.

On the positive, she said the toppings and extras were all great, and incredibly fresh.

I plan to give it another week or so, and then give it a try.

I still haven't tried. . .not sure I will. . .

I wanted to hold back any opinions until I tried everything on the menu at least once. Now that I have, I have to agree with these posts. I really wanted to like this place so much because of its concept and its pedigree. Unfortunately, it's just not good. I hope they work out some kinks because I think the idea is great. On another note, I am looking forward to 610 Magnolia's Inferno dinner on October 30!

I liked the pork sandwich I had, but as everyone else has said the namesake weren't very good at all.
