What are our best Drive-ins, Diners and Dives?

by Robin Garr » Mon Oct 19, 2009 2:24 pm

Now that we've pretty much worked over Bourdain, I was thinking it might be fun to throw together a list of places around Louisville (and even around the region) that Guy Fieri might love. Who knows, if we mustered a great list, maybe we could send it to Food Network and lure him in here, too. :D

Right off the bat, I thought of Flabby's, Cottage Inn, Bosna-Mak and Wagner's. What else we got? Locally, across the river, maybe even Lexington and Cincy ... whether we do it for Fieri or whether we do it for us, let's list our best drive-ins, diners and dives!

Not sure if it's a "Guy" kinda place but it's THIS guys kinda place..."A New Direction" on HWY 146 at the Gene Snyder. It's the kinda place where you can get some great "beer joint" food at a really good price (Burgers, Fish Sammich, etc)...Add in the fact that 30 minutes after you belly up to the bar you've got 3 brand new "best friends" and it's my kinda place.

What about Lynn's....that seems to be the type of thing that Guy would go for.

I respect Lynn's, Bill, but I'm kind of tired of Lynn's being the place that visiting media always go to, as if it's Louisville's signature restaurant. It's not, and if this hypothetical ever came to pass, I'd just as soon guide him to some of our less-known jewels. Toast on Market? :)

True, but it is still my favorite place, aside from the Brown itself, for a hot brown.

Richo's is sort of a dive. I can see Guy tasting the pizza and Spinach dip and going crazy.

Ollie's Trolley... Tasty burgers and more for the simple fact I would LOVE to see him try to pull off his shtick in that closet of a space :D

Mike Linning's... If you have traveled a little around this country; Fried cod on rye bread is something you are generally only going to find in Louisville, nice Drive-in feel on the river, when it's open for the season.

Wagner's Pharmacy... Because it's simple down home goodness

Flabby's...It's Almost... a Louisville tradition. I would take out of town guests there who would appreciate such places.

Granville Inn....One of the best burgers in town, and definitely a first class dive!

And last but not least

Joe Huber's...Yep I said it...We took the Rent's there this past weekend and they do what they do pretty darn good. Especially this time of year with all of the "leaf peepers and pumpkin pickers". When we were seated at 6:45PM every thing came out hot, fresh and delicious...And the place was packed to the rafters! You could call this a "Country Drive-In"

There's Swan Dive. I mean, heck, they've got dive right in their name!

D'nalleys? Haven't been there in 15 or 20 years but it seems to be the only place in louisville that looks like a true Diner.

Yeah, Genny's Diner definitely fits the bill for the show, but eeeh. . . Most of his stops have some remarkable quality like a pancake as big as your head or a falafel drive-in or whatever.

Juanita's Burger Boy fits the bill in all respects. (Except the pancake as big as your head angle)

Remember, it's just "Burger Boy" now, Ed. They lost the "Juanita" when new owners cleaned up the place.
