Local Restaurants Going Above and Beyond...

by Brian Curl » Tue Oct 13, 2009 9:49 am

Last Thursday about 9pm I was hungry and hadn't had a chance to eat yet. I was on Facebook and starving. I'm friends with Danny Mac on Facebook but had never corresponded with him.

I saw that Danny Mac's was online so out of the blue I hungrily and jokingly asked "hey, will you bring me some pizza to Fern Creek?", having read on here that he doesn't deliver anymore and never delivered to Fern Creek anyway. So he immediately responds that he just happens to have someone in the restaurant that lives in Fern Creek that was getting ready to leave and he could have them drop off a pizza for me. I was like, really??? He said sure.

I was so surprised and hungry (not sure how long I could wait) I had to think just for a minute about the offer. But I didn't think long. I had saw Robin's review of the Chicken Bacon Ranch pizza from Danny Mac's. So I called in, paid and gave directions. Within 35 minutes I had the pizza at my door.

The pizza was wonderful and very flavorful. I'm not a ranch addict but the ranch base, tender white meat chicken, fresh whole slices of roma tomatoes, the wonderful cheese and crisp bacon crumbles on top. I'm more of a traditional pizza person but the flavors of this pizza were great, far exceeding my expectations. $20 including a tip I gave the person who brought it to me and I at the whole pizza in several meals over the next several days. Needless to say, this experience gives me a very positive impression of this business and their willingness to think outside the box.

I thought this was a great example of a local going above and beyond the call of duty! So let's support this local and all of the others out there.

Any other examples of locals going above and beyond?

I once called in a completely wrong order to Zen Garden thinking I was ordering two small appetizers when I really ordered two huge entrees. There was a drastic price difference but she was really awesome about it. I didn't have the money, I felt horrible, yet she gave it to me anyway at the way lower price. I'll go back over and over to places like that.

Oh, and Danny Mac's rulz!!!

I had been looking for a chance to try Sari Sari and called about 2:10 one day last week seeking to order carry out to pick up on the way home from downtown. They told me they closed at 2:00. While I was trying to figure out my next move, my phone rang. I guess they used caller i.d. to get my number, and they said the cook was still there and willing to prepare my order. That was a nice way to turn me into a customer, and it was delicious as expected.

Carole, that's a good story. It's amazing how doing something a little out of the ordinary can make someone into a loyal customer.

Adam, I thought the slogan was "Danny Mac's Rocks" ...?

I have another recent example. I was going to Cumberland Brews to get two growlers filled up. I saw Matthew from Derby City Express sitting outside of Ray's Monkey House. I go in Matthews place on occasion so we said hello and I told him I was getting a couple of growlers from Cumberland. He told me that Ray's had a new Oak Aged Arrogant Bastard that they had just tapped that was really good. So I was like hmmm, I wonder if I can get a growler of that? I went inside Ray's and the lady working wasn't sure but she called Nimbuz and although they usually do not sell growlers he said sure and sold me a growler. I then went to Cumberland and got the second one refilled. So a great tip from Matthew and Rays accommodating my request were both much appreciated!

As some of you know i recently spent time in the hospital. CPC's Shawn Vest tried to bring me a goat cheese pizza and one of the new salads he is putting on the menu as comfort food. Shawn was going to take his time off to bring it to me. I did not know when I was going to be released, so we couldn't hook up. Shawn willingness, rather insistance to do something for me is overwhelmingly over and above!

We wanted pizza tonight and trekked over to the Boombozz Taproom. Since my kitchen floor got new ceramic tile and new grout this week we've been eating out a lot. Sooo, I checked the Boombozz website, found a coupon, printed it and off we went.

Unfortunately when we got to the Taproom, the server pointed out the fine print that read "Springhurst and J-town only" Then the manager declared the coupon to be for carry out only. Now that wasn't on the coupon anywhere.

Then the manager said that if we'd like to stay and eat, he's "show us some love" aka discount the bill. We got free diet colas and the pizza for half price. We tipped the server 40% / what the tip would have been on the amount of the Coupon Special.

Wow! It was basically my mistake. Boombozz has customers for-ever now.

Oh yes, and the pizza was excellent as always.

Another example of a local restaurant going above and beyond. . .and the winner is. . .Santa Fe! I stopped in there tonight on my way home from the Festival of Faiths to pick up a burrito for Robert (and a pequena quesadilla for me, don't tell the Weight Watchers gods). Robert is a man that likes to push the limits of spicy, and he's a big fan of La Bamba and their "diablo" sauce. So, before I left, I inquired if they have any super-extra-spicy sauce, and one of the staff picked up a bottle of their "El Yucateco" habanero salsa saying how it was the supremo hot sauce, so I just commented that I would look for it the next time I was in the grocery, but then he said there wasn't much left in the bottle, so I could have it! I just thought that was so cool. I tried to protest but he insisted. And then the girl ringing me up acted like I was so over the top for giving a 2-something tip after that. Love that place! :D

That stuff is hot. Pretty much just Habanero in a bottle!
