napa river grill

Spurred by a Costco gift cerificate, my husband and I went sans kids. At first, I was disappointed by the menu. Filet, Caesar salad, salmon, chicken breast...and the hallmark of all mediocre menus, the crab cake. But we ordered a nice wine, and we discovered that although the menu was conventional, it was very well prepared. The decor was sophisticated. The service attentive but not obnoxious. The pork chop was perfectly prepared, just a hint if pink inside with the fat layer crisp outside. And the Brussels sprouts on the side tender but not overcooked. It was lovely, solid and good.

I haven't been to Napa since they left St. Matthews, but from your description it sounds like the menu has changed dramatically. I'm glad things were good, but it's disappointing to hear they've "dumbed down" the menu, if I'm reading this correctly. I seem to recall some pretty interesting menu items in the old incarnation.

May be a case of the eye of the beholder. Here's a link to the dinner menu:

During my last review, I thought the ahi cornucopia app was outstanding, and was reasonably happy with the Ménage à Trois entree (Honey miso sea bass, pomegranate salmon, ahi poivre noir, goat cheese polenta, green tea Jasmine rice, Asian vegetables).

It didn't strike me as lackluster or conventional, but I did make good choices ... others in our party of four had some hits and some misses; and I was a little less happy with a lunch there. Here's my Dec. 10, 2008 review, for which we were joined by Forumite TP and his bride.

Thanks, Robin. The menu looks a little more conventional than that at the St. Matthews location, but still looks good, and my original impression of "dumbed down" doesn't seem accurate.

I notice a few of the old items, like the tomato soup (last time I had it, my favorite tomato soup in the city), the pad thai, and the cast iron steak.
