Ideas Please.......

by Bonnie E. » Thu Oct 08, 2009 7:37 pm

for a girls birthday dinner. Firstly, by girls I mean 45-50 yr olds celebrating a friends birthday. Game for any type of food and drink. Just wanting something new. Birthday girls favorites are Seviche, L and N....but really she just likes any good food. Want to take her some place she hasn't been. Does anyone know if La Bodega has reopened? How are things at the Tequila Factory. Not a terribly loud bunch...well not at first anyway...... :) Thanks for your suggestions.

We had dinner at La Bodega tonight. It's back and better than before.

They have all the tapas that we loved from the old place and some phenomenal new tapas that we first tried at the preview a couple of nights before they opened last week. Meant to write a review of the preview, but medical issues with the parents and work intervened.

From the old menu we had our favorites of the Grilled Lamb with Madeira Sauce, Sauteed Mushrooms flavored with Chorizo, Spanish Meatballs, and a basket of bread with Ali-Oli.

From the new Small Bites menu we had Chorizo, Serrano Ham, Goat Cheese and Quail Egg on a crusty slice of baguette and Marinated Pork with Manchego Cheese and Dates also on a baguette slice.

A couple of glasses of Gran Familia and Sangria for my wife's birthday made for a grand celebration. We had numerous other samples from the new menu items at the preview and all were worth ordering, but we ran out of room.

Sitting in the window as the rain fell we really felt that we were in some other city as the sound track, wine, and tapas kept coming. Maggie and Miguel have really hit a home run with the new space and menu. We'll be back soon.

Thanks! I am glad to hear La Bodega is back. My husband and I loved it before and will get there soon. Also, reallly like Mojitos. Have been to Jack's, just for drinks. Had not thought of Equus. Thanks for the idea.

Volare or Proof - There's something about the atmosphere of each that makes me feel not only that I'm not in Louisville, but that I'm part of a hip crowd.

And trust me, I'm not hip anywhere else.

732 Social, Wiltshire on Market or Mayan Cafe - all very hip places!

You've got some GREAT suggestions - I love Social, Mayan and Proof.

I'd steer clear of Tequila Factory. I went recently with two friends and our overall opinion was "fine." The food was OK, nothing special nothing terrible. The atmosphere was odd. We walked in at night and we all shied away from the overly bright lights. The first table we were taken to had a loose top. This wasn't a question of an uneven leg, the top of the table was literally wobbling around as if it might fall into one of our laps. The top of the table was so loose I can't imagine it had just happened. When we mentioned it to staff they moved us but didn't seem surprised by the wobbly top and didn't do anything to remedy the problem. My sense was that the person thought "oh yea, that's the table with the loose top." Bizarre.

Bonnie, what about Havana Rumba? That place is always fun and festive.

OOOHHHH, Bill funny you mentioned Havana. That is where they always take me on my birthday! It is one of my favs. We've never tried Volare, that is a great idea. Have been to Proof. I enjoyed it, but definately am not hip enough! Thanks for the ideas.

Winston's. Fabulous small plates menu. Lots of fun to pass around. Great dishes we had last night included smoked salmon with egg salad, tomato with lobster salad and "not brown" - similar to a juicy hot brown but made with crab and shrimp. Rich and delicious.
My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.

Either Basa (good drinks as well as fabulous food) or Red Pepper.

If you hit Red Pepper, you can get a special "feast" in honor of the birthday for $30-35/person (just don't eat for a day beforehand)
