Good Wedge Salad - cheap place?

by Robin F. » Thu Oct 08, 2009 5:50 pm

Okay - it doesn't have to be a cheap place, but in the budget category. I'm craving a wedge salad (blue cheese please) after the fabulous one I had at Volare a few weeks ago.

Alas, funds are short on this Thursday before payday and we have approx. $40 for 2. Any suggestions on a budget wedgie? :D

IMHO, the best wedge salad by a long shot in the city is at Uptown Cafe. It's huge for $6.95. Great dressing, and topped with spiced pecans.

Depending on your appetite and if you want more food, you can easily split that and a pasta dish for around $20. Heck, you could get two pasta dishes and two salads for under $40.

Without a doubt the best wedge salad, value for money wise, has to go to Son of a Sailor in LaGrange. Excellent salad with blue cheese and a balsamic vinegar drizzle. Cheap at either $3.50 or $3.95, can't remember which. Shrimp and grits and Low Country boil rock, too.

i'll tell you but you're not gonna like it. outback has a wedge salad. iceberg, bleu cheese dressing (made in-house) tomatoes, red onion, bacon, basalmic reduction (also made in-house), fresh ground pepper, bleu cheese crumbled over the top. all fresh ingredients, prepped in-house. it's all my coworkers' favorite salad on our menu. i realize it's a chain but it's a durn good salad. sorry. only $3.95 a la carte or have it as a side with any meal (included in price of meal). there is also a roast filet tenderloin wedge salad. it's the wedge served with 4-5 oz of med-rare roasted beef tenderloin. around $7.95 i believe.
chi mangia bene, viva bene.

amen.

It's not cheap, but Z's Oysterbar has an awesome wedge salad.

You could go there for lunch...

My older brother could always be counted on to provide one.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Thanks for all the great suggestions (expect for the one about John's brother ). I'll have to do the rounds. I don't mind Outback - so no apologies necessary.

Steve P. - I know, I know, they are cheap to make at home but sometimes it's just not the same.

FWIW - Z's ties Volare for my favorite upscale wedgy, perhaps those could be called "Wedgeford" in deference to their surroundings.

My wife is like this as well. In her mind salads are "better" in restaurants than what I can make at home; Even though I have been a chef for over twenty years, in some really fine places. There are a lot of things she percives to to better than what I make at home. The one that really drives me nuts is the fact that she LOVES The Old Spaghetti Factory for some un-godly reason unknown to me. I find it to be some of the lamest food I've ever eaten. But she has to have that brown buttter with mizithra cheese from there, not at home. Even though it's super easy to make and anyone could prepare it, she has to have it there because it's "better". I just don't get it....

I might be a little bias (haha) But Jeff Rubys has a great wedge. And, i guess, if thats all you are going to have, it can be considered "budget friendly." couple glasses of wine, couple wedge salads, tax and tip - you could make it in the 40 range. (I will say this, one is probably enough for two.) Ive always taken this as a competition of the salad dressing not the styrofoam...i mean iceberg... And that being said - it is worth it. (smoked bacon, pear tomatoes, REAL maytag bleu, chives, well seasoned)
disclaimer - I havent been back since my departure last year - so things may have changed. But not likely with Stefan running the show. Just dont beat me up if it has changed over the course of the past year.

Well, Seviche has a wedge salad and 1/2 priced seviches on Sundays, so that's budget friendly. No kidding, I dined there on a Sunday once with 1/2 price mojitos for under $20 happy as a minx. The menu used to state that it was served with Maytag, but it's been awhile since I've looked at that salad on their menu, so it may have changed to Point Reyes. Either cheese, please. And egg, red onion, carrot, tomato, bacon, balsamic, etc...
