Anyone up for a "Fall Ball"

by Steve P » Tue Oct 06, 2009 1:21 pm

Any Forum Byters up for a pre-holiday "Fall Ball" ??? (how about either of the first two weekends in November). I've done these things with groups of friends in the past and it's a lot of fun. Ya rent a Legion/Union hall somewhere, have a cash bar, a few folks get together on the main course/s and everyone else brings a "dish to pass". Gotta be a place in L'ville we could pull off such a low key "everyone's invited throw down". I volunteer my lovely bride Becky to bring her world famous stuffed cabbage rolls and I could probably be talked into doing 15 or 20 pounds of REAL BBQ...and I'm also up for doing a lot (but probably not all) of the legwork.

Anyone interested ? Come on...it would be fun. Great way to meet a lot of the people you know only by by name on the forum.

Love the concept, Steve. Any idea where we could make something like this happen?

I volunteer Willie out at Westport (on a day they are closed). Will could run the cash bar and we could all bring a dish. Maybe we could all kick in for some music as well. Just a thought......(sorry to throw down the gauntlet Will....love ya!)

Robin,

Funny you would ask

The St. Matthews American Legion (next to Urban Fitness) has a banquet room (up to 300 people) available on Saturday and Sunday either of the first two weekends in Nov (I'm thinking a Sunday might be good because it would allow some of our "industry insiders" to join in). The cost is $450 for 4 hours ($75 for each hour over that). The price includes a bartender, set up and take down (but no "decorations or tablecloths"). The kitchen is available for an extra $25. You can bring all the food ya want, drinks other than coffee and lemonade must be purchased through the legion (makes sense). Assuming we could get 50 paying adults (kids eat free ????) that would be 10 bucks a person (well duhhhh)...Hey, maybe we could do a thing where it's 10 bucks and a couple of cans of food to get in. God knows the food shelves are going to be hurting this holiday season and it might be a good opportunity to help out. More than 50 people and anything we take in above the cost of the rental goes to the food shelf. Less than 50 people and Becky and I are good for the first $100 of any deficit (our pleasure)....Thinking out loud (and getting WAY ahead of myself) we could do a "seasonal comforts" food theme...as opposed to "Oktoberfest" which might serve to promote excessive debauchery and foolishness.

The primary unknown at this point would be the ambiance of the facility...I haven't seen it, just talked to the guy on the phone.

Oops, mark out Sunday evenings in November for Mary and me ... we'll be otherwise engaged most Sunday evenings in November and December except around Thanksgiving and Christmas. :(

I never really think of Legion Halls as places of great ahm-bee-ahnce, but what do I know? How about Clancy's suggestion? Would Willie approve? :)

Robin,

My thought on the Legion was less about ambiance and more about a centralized location...That and it's the only place I knew to call :? Looks like I'll be on Shelbyville Road sometime on Friday evening, I can stop in to check the place out "just in case"...but hey, this is a democracy so if anyone (Will ?) etc, etc has a better idea I'm good with it...One thing to keep in mind is that most places won't let you bring food into their facility and that was one of the cornerstones of the idea...

<edited for spelling>...damned spell checkers

The German-American Club on Lincoln Ave. rents out their facility and it has great "ambiance" although I am not sure the cost. They do have a kitchen/bar and a stage for live acts.

American Legion on Bardstown across from Krispy Kreme/Assumption has a more intimate rental space than your average hall, it's upstairs, I've been to a wedding up there and it's nice. Not sure about prices though.

I am fairly confident the Rudyard Kipling would love to host such an event.

Ohhhhhhh come on Kyle. Yeah, so you hired a few ugly ones last year but don't be so hard on yourself. At least the one with the nose ring and the big ol' "tramp stamp" was kinda cute.
