Looking for some place cheap and new(to me)

by Adam Smith » Fri Oct 02, 2009 3:24 pm

Going with a friend for an early dinner, we're both on a serious budget this week. I thought Bazo's because I've never been there but the idea of fish tacos wasn't appealing to him. He won't do Indian either, but anything else should be fine. If you guys could, rattle off a few places that we could eat for $10-15(food+non-achoholic drink+tip) a person, just to get my mind moving, I'm having trouble thinking of places for some reason. Thanks.

My vote for that price range would easily be Zaytun on Bardstown Road (Mediterranean stuff all in your price range, including excellent giant gyros, nice space, also usually cheap wine deals), or their sister-place next door, Blue Lagoon (a little more upscale digs, tons of affordably priced tapas, very very good).

Both are close to Douglass Loop.

Jockamo's for bread sticks stuffed with toppings. They are friggin fabulous. If there is the potential for kissing, you may want to take some mints, the garlic is powerful!

Ooops. Sorry. Misread the title. I thought it said "Looking for someone cheap and new" and I was going to make a couple of recommendations...based on heresy of course. Never mind.

As long as I'm here let me concur with annemaries suggestion and throw in Joe's OK Bayou as an alternative.

You need to come to A.J.'s Gyros. Easily the best gyros around $6.00. Fresh cut fries, English style Fish 'n' chips and lots more

Tony P - tell us about the game time specials at the taphouse tonight...

Baxter Station has salads and sandwiches that are excellent under $10.
Cafe Lou Lou has huge sandwiches and 1/2 portions of pasta also under $10.

All (including Taproom of course) have great beer choices if that is within budget....

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, most were places I've not been yet and are on my "must try" list. We wound up at Red Pepper, probably my favorite restaurant in town and he'd never been. I had a new dish, as I almost always do; Boiled pork szechuan style... OUTSTANDING. Also had Unique Chicken Smell for an app which was also amazing and I'll likely get every time I go from now on. He was a little less adventurous and went with wonton soup and Szechuan beef but he liked them both. With two cokes, our bill was 29.05 + 5.95 tip so we got outta there spending right around our goal.

I just gotta say again how wonderful the service is there and how great the food is, I've never been disappointed. Sari Sari, Zaytun and Joe's OK Bayou were all in the running but I knew he'd like Red Pepper and selfishly I really wanted to go back. Maybe it's time for another offline there, I missed the last one.

It's a delicious app of shredded chicken in a peanuty sauce that includes fish sauce or something similar.

Madeline, I don't know if this will make you feel better or worse, but if you translate the Chinese characters on the Red Pepper menu entry that they call "Unique Chicken Smell" in English, it comes out "Strange Flavor Chicken." It really is delicious, though, and I love Red Pepper. Just be sure to ask for the "authentic Chinese" menu, which has their most interesting dishes. It's all translated in English so you won't accidentally order intestines or kidneys and such unless you want to. (Although at a forum offline there, a lot of us tried the pork stomach, and it was amazingly good.)

I'm thrilled you considered Sari Sari. I often forget about it when my needs meet similar criteria. If you've never been and I were you, I'd put it on my list.
