Review: Buffalo Wings and Rings

by Steve P » Tue Sep 29, 2009 12:03 pm

Here's the final review from this weekends Sports bar mini-crawl.

Having achieved Buffalo Wing nirvana at Rooties, followed by enough beers at New Direction to quench a moderate thirst, the lovely Rebecca and I decided to end the afternoon. (Ok...it's dark by now, so sue me) with one last adult beverage at Buffalo Wings and Rings. I've been to W&R before and really wasn't that impressed but considered it my civic duty to investigate this establishment, a self proclaimed "Titans bar" on a football Sunday.

Speaking as a veteran Sunday afternoon "bar-gater" lets start this out by saying that I am highly suspect of any sports bar where the first thing that greets you as you enter the door is a bank of gum ball and candy machines...As is the case at W&R. Somehow it just sends the message that tossing out a few well placed cuss words when your QB throws an interception is probably not an acceptable option. W&R is loosely divided into two sections, as you might expect a restaurant side (with numerous TV's) and a "bar" side (and I use the word "bar" loosely) with even more TV's. The decor is rather "corporate like" with every picture and TV in it's place and a place for everything. Sunday evening the restaurant side was fairly busy and confirming my early suspicions was pretty well populated with the suburban "soccer mom and dad" crowd, complete with offspring (so much for those cuss words). The bar is rather smallish and cramped and was still packed with the remnants of a football crowd...Not so much "fans" (as no Titans colors were observed) but more like dads who had used a trip to Home Depot as an excuse to get away from the wife and kids for an hour or so. We didn't really see alot of food in evidence but based on my past experience it's pretty pedestrian...in fact almost commissary like. Past visits found the wings to be average...on a good day. The fries and burgers are pretty much "meehhhhh". In other words they'll do in a pinch. Haven't tried the rings. Who knows, maybe they're good...Something has to keep these people coming in.

Taking the last high top in the bar we were greeted by a server who I came to call "The boy with far away eyes". I asked the young man if they had any kind of game-time drink specials going on, to which he replied that he would have to check. Coming back to the table he replied in the negative, so after looking over (another) weak beer selection we settled for a couple of Guinness (which judging by the price they were extremely proud of). Settling in to take stock of our surroundings (I was surprisingly able to still peer out of both eyes) we noticed that every TV...all 8 or 10 of 'em had signs taped to them, declaring exactly which games would be shown on which TV...in other words don't come in and ask to see a particular game on a TV next to your table. Far away eye boy came back a time or two to check on us and as his luck would have it each time he showed up I had a question for him that required him to "go check". In his defense he did know where the rest rooms were and seemed to be pretty proud of getting that answer right...the first time. Maybe it's just me but if I'm running a sports bar, on a Sunday, I'm going to have my "first string" in the game.

Anyway, long story somewhat shorter, we enjoyed our Guiness (which BTW were served at something approaching the correct temp) and I loaded up my designated driver in the passengers seat and we herp-a-derped on down the road. All in all W&R is not a bad place...and might even be a good place if your happen to be in that mini van time of life.

Hah, that's great!

Bah, there should never be a mini van time of life! Not that mini vans are bad, and neither are lots of children for that matter. But you've got to stay away from the mini van mindset.

I'm reminded of the Bowie lyrics:
"There's never gonna be enough bullets
There's never gonna be enough sex
And I'm never ever gonna get old"

That's the goal to which I aspire.

Paul,

Check this study out on car buyer demographics...I tried to read it but alas too many big words.

http://repositories.cdlib.org/cgi/viewc ... postprints

See if you can guess the sentence I inserted  :P

Minivan/Van. Minivan drivers tend to have a weaker pro-high density attitude. They tend to
be calm, and not to be loners. Minivan drivers tend to perceive that they travel more by
personal vehicle and overall short-distance than others do. Further, they tend to enjoy
traveling by personal vehicle more than average. In terms of demographics, minivan drivers
are more likely to be soccer moms who skipped the part of drivers education where they taught how to park/back up properly, females, homemakers, or age 41-64. They also tend
to have higher household incomes as well as lower personal incomes. Minivan drivers are
overrepresented in multi-vehicle households or larger households with children.

Wings and Rings is a few minutes away from us and it seems to stay pretty busy...I had already dismissed it as a poor knock off, so wouldn't have ventured there anyways... just glad to know I wasn't missing out on anything!

What/where is this Rootie's you speak of? I'm probably the worst chicken wing connoiseur ever as I kinda liked the ones I got at Domino's and haven't been impressed with most of the wing chains...but I keep trying to find some that are good!

Lol at the minivan demographics!

You think that because you are a youngun. It happens. And yes.. lots of children are a pain in the a....

My daughter told me she would never have a minivan after I said they would be nice if you have a couple of kids. She's got one. I pickup my grandson sometimes at Holy Trinity and the parking lot is full of people who once lusted after vettes and ragtops and other cool cars. The same people now have SUVs and minivans.

Haul them rugrats.

Miss Chele,

We live over by the soccer fields in Buckner...which holds the world record for the most mini-vans in a parking lot (that is not a car dealership)...Forty Seven. You want to talk about free style parking :P The only thing I've seen that ever came close was the time I counted 14 "Geezer Mobiles" (Crown Victorias) in the parking lot at a K of C hall.

BTW, don't take anything I say personally...ever. When it comes to poking fun everyone (especially myself) is fair game.

Rooties is out Westport Road, past the Ford plant, on the north side of the road, where formerly was a Hoops and some others after Hoops, I think.

I'm assuming you're saying the beer is good because it's served at the right temperature because Steve said earlier than the beer menu wasn't that good. Or is it just that you and Steve have different tastes in beer? I'm not a big beer drinker but when I do drink beer I want the kinds I like served at the proper temperature.

Mark,

Don't overanalyze, I just like beer. The food, however, is mediocre at best.

Hoops and then Woody's and now Rooties.

Pretty much at the intersection of Collins Lane and Westport Road.
