Kris,
We had our anniversary dinner there a few weeks ago and it was terrific. We got several small plates to start - the tuna 2 ways and the fried rock shrimp and chicken livers. I had the chop salad and the wild mushroom ravioli. Herman got the duck breast. We thought it was all excellent. Service was very good and we will be back. Enjoy!

Service is always great at this place. I thnk they must get extra credit for giving good service. The food is excellent, too! A great choice. I bet you'll be happy.

I was taken there for my birthday this year!

Winston's!

Postby MarieP » Fri Feb 06, 2009 10:28 pm
My parents just took me out for my birthday to Winston's! I had been wanting to go there for some time, and honestly it had dropped off my radar of possible places my parents would take me. So that made the trip there even more fun :D My mom did not tell me where we were going and she faked me out, driving through the drop-off lane of the airport and going past Border's telling me we were going to buy a cookbook and make dinner ourselves! Of course, she started out with saying that a co-worker said he liked their french fries (Mickey D's....yeaaaaah!")

It was an incredible meal with great service! While pricey, it is wonderful for a special occasion, and they are good-sized portions. We started out sharing several appetizers: the pommes frites with a creamy, mayo-like sauce; wild mushroom ravioli; and a salad of greens with delicious hot-water cornbread, country ham, and a fried egg!

For our entrees, my dad got the seafood special (halibut, shrimp, scallops), my mom got a half-order of the "Hot Not Brown" (fried green tomatoes, crab, mornay sauce with a side of a (gigantic) baked potato with fried oysters and sorghum sauce), and I got the lamb loin with cabbage and lentils. All of these were very tasty! And the rolls that came before our meal were very good as well (both wheat rolls and a flat crispy bread that tasted of cumin).

For dessert, we shared a good sized portion of vanilla bean creme brulee with whipped cream and a big strawberry.

We also shared a bottle of Riesling (didn't pay attention to the name...they just recommended the one we got...and it was very nice!)

It's crazy that I didn't even guess Winston's because they were mentioned on the board in regards to the upcoming Salvation Army event on the 10th.

Great food!! Support your Louisville originals!!!

To some degree it's the luck of the draw!

It's definitely an "upper-level" restaurant, priced about 75-80% of the level of comparable places. If the students are nearing the end of their practicum, food and service can be absolutely exceptional; if they have just started that week it won't be bad (there are pro's back there supervising), but could be "mixed".

It still is good, fun, and you're helping the chefs and staffs of the future. Enjoy!

Amazing meal from beginning to end! We started out slitting the wild mushroom ravioli. Stuffed with a mushroom mixture served with english peas, mushrooms, country ham in a cream sauce. Great way to start! I had the duck breast with roasted red pepper grit cake and squash. I hate squash, but ate almost every bit of this. The grit cake was thick, but not at all dry and very flavorful. The duck was very well prepared and extremely tasty. This was great and a huge portion to boot!
My wife had the 1/2 not brown and the Winston salad, and raved about both. I had a bite of her lobster from the not brown and it was very good. We ended the meal with a chocolate cake with a layer of orange butter cream in the middle, with the entire cake covered with chocolate. Huge portion that we could not finish. THe orange buttercream was a really nice touch.
Service was attentive but not obtrusive. Jordan did a wonderful job! Chef Castro and Sous Chef Adams have that place humming even though its only the beginning of the semester. My wife and I had a wonderful date night. Thanks so much to everyone there for making it a great experience!
