Best Dinner Roll

by Paul Mick » Wed Sep 23, 2009 10:06 pm

From LEO Reader's Choice Awards:

Best Dinner Roll

1. O’Charley’s

2. Texas Roadhouse

3. Red Lobster

First of all I said to myself, "Hmm."

Then I started thinking about it, and while I am partial to the cornbread muffins at Chicken King on Broadway, I can't remember the last time I ate at a place that served actual dinner rolls. Can you all think of any local rolls that stand out? I certainly can't.

The Chicken House in Sellersburg has some excellent homemade GIANT dinner rolls. They were delish the last time we were up there.

I don't know if I've ever been to an O'Charley's... :?

I will admit that myself and around 9 friends ate nearly 1/2 a kilo of fat in Red Lobster's rolls alone my freshman year of college. However when there are around 10 grams of fat in a roll, it doesn't take that many...

I've never heard of it before, but then again I'm so rarely in Sellerburg! :D If I'm ever around there though, I'll definitely check it out.

As an aside, I did think of two places with great rolls that aren't around here.

Lambert's Cafe in Sikeston Missouri is the famous home of the "throwed rolls." In case you're not familiar with it, a server with a cart throws them to you from across the room and then you can slather them with butter, honey, and sorghum molasses. I need to go there again soon!

Also, Patti's in Western Kentucky serves bread baked in clay flour pots with some very good strawberry butter on the side. They're also famous for their 2 inch-thick pork chop.

I like the dinner rolls (well," lunch rolls" as I only eat there at lunch time one a month) at Vincenzo's. Really crusty. So Vincenzo's gets my vote.

Funny, I thought that Red Lobster served biscuits. I my mind there is quite a bit of difference between a biscuit and a dinner roll. I also don't think of cornbread as a dinner roll.

They do and there is! :D I didn't want to bring it up as a point of contention and thereby subvert the democratic institution that placed Red Lobster in 3rd place, but perhaps someone should write a letter to LEO about this gross inaccuracy!

i'm working for outback these days and i must say, our bread is fantastic. the customers eat our bread like it's the best thing they've ever put in their mouths. we have small loaves of honey wheat bread that's dark brown in color and we serve it with real whipped butter. it's been awhile since i've been to o'charley's but i do remember their bread being the closest thing to actual rolls i can think of. my personal "pre-meal-free-bread" favorite is the stuff irish rover serves. they bring slices of two kinds of bread in one basket but i like the whitish colored one best. i think it is sourdough and i'm pretty sure i remember an employee telling me the bread is made from scratch and baked there at the restaurant. i love that stuff!

I must admit that I'm simply surprised that there is a "best dinner roll" category at all. Not on my radar at all. But power to all of you dinner roll lovers.

Having said something similar last year (someone, check the database!), I'm going to sound like a broken record...

...the absurdity of some of the categories reeks of a bunch of "got nothing better to do" peoples sitting around a conference table trying to one-up each other in regards to the absurd.

There's a fine line between People's Choice in categories worth a damn and People's Choice for the hell of it. Alas, I guess the line separating the two is rather subjective. So yes, Nimbus, power to all of you dinner roll lovers. You know, if that's your thang!

The fried biscuits with warm apple butter at Huber's are delicious. Not at ALL healthy, but so good.

I know Im going to take a hit for this but Claudia Sanders makes some pretty tasty yeast dinner rolls. I know I know I hate the KFC....but when some of my family comes down to visit they like to go Claudia's. I have no choice in this, but I do enjoy the rolls as well as the slaw.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Well, for my money, I'm quite fond of Sister Shubert dinner rolls. They make great Beef Tenderloin Sandwiches with Henry Baines. :D :D :D

Off the top of my head, Bristol stands out as a place with some pretty addicting rolls.
