Employee Benefits

OK, I admit that I know nothing about the restaurant biz, but was just curious what benefit packages you offer to employees? Paid time off (vacation), health insurance, retirement/401K, disability, etc.?

Haha...you're kidding, right? Unfortunately, the vast majority of restaurant workers don't get benefits at all. No vacation, no health care, no retirement, no disability, etc....

Larger establishments do sometimes offer it to workers, depending on their weekly hours. Many workers don't qualify. Often there is a substantial (several months) waiting period before the benefits kick in.

Small group health insurance plans are insanely expensive. Hopefully, our country will pass some meaningful healthcare reform this session, but a couple of local politicians have been firmly opposed (Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Baron Hill (D-IN)). Give them a call, and let them know you want them to vote yes for health care reform. Tell them why. It will just be an assistant, but they'll take notes on what you say.

Health care for all would be a nice start.....

i got so mad when i saw him in that group of sell-outs on the front page of sunday's paper. i guess they've all more than likely taken pay-off/s from some group or another at some time or another. whatever happened to being elected to serve the people? i'm disgusted.

I had insurance when I worked for Irish Rover, but that's pretty much unheard of elsewhere. My benefits at other restaurants included free or discounted food.

In my experience, in all of the jobs I've had in the past 20 years or so, I have been fortunate to have been offered health benefits as I have usually been in some sort of managment position. The places I've worked value their key employees enough to offer some sort of benefits package, even the smaller "mom-and pop" establishments. Vacation time varies greatly from place to place. If you get any kind of paid time off in the resturant bizz then you are considered very lucky. That's why I'm so thankful to have the position I have now. I have government benefits which are better than any I've ever had. Paid vacations AND holidays. "Normal "working hours..Monday through Friday, eight or so hours a day; In what appears to be a "recession-proof" position. I have also went from a very high stress position to an almost no stress position. The benefits from that simple fact become more apparent to me every day!

I would guess the biggest benefit from working in a restaurant is a pay check. Something many people go without these days.

"Working poor" get screwed when it comes to health insurance. Just plain poor get Medicaid which the Working Poor pay for.
Why would any of our wealthy politicians want to change that!

Texas ? Hell yeah you can have Texas...and we'll throw in Oklahoma and Arkansas for free. What will you give us for Louisiana ? They've got some good food down that way, so they've gotta be worth something.
