The Pappy is here.

by Steve P » Sat Sep 19, 2009 12:51 pm

This falls Pappy Van Winkle was released late this week. I was on the "will call" list at the Liquor Barn and got the call about 2pm yesterday. By the time my lovely bride got there at 4:30pm they were sold out of the 15 year but she did manage to grab a bottle of the 20 y.o for my birthday. She said they still had a stock of the 10, 12, 20 and 23 y.o.

Being on a call list is the way to go. The fine, fine folks at Gemelli called and we reserved 4 bottles of the 12 y/o. By the time my beautiful bride got over to pick them up this morning they were sold out of all the rest of their stock. Thanks to Gemelli that wrapped up the 9 month collection process for the 20 bottles we needed for Christmas gifts around the world.

Ed,

How does one go about getting on that Xmas list ?

I was hoping to score a couple of bottles of the 15 y.o. but alas had to settle for one bottle of the 20 y.o (all the budget would allow). The thought of coming home and having that stuff waiting for me under the bar has me quivering like a school girl on a second date.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Hopefully this means that we will be getting ours shortly on the Sunny side.

Its odd.... 3 years ago I was able to buy the 15 year old by the case, heck I sold almost 3 cases worth, now I am lucky if I get 4 bottles at a time...

I hate letting out my little secret too much, but if you're in need of Pappy, check Hometown Liquors (Bardstown and Bonnycastle). They tend to get a pretty good number of the 15 and 20 year old, and it lasts a bit longer.

One of the owners told me (probably 2 years ago) that they get as many or more bottles of it than anyone in Jefferson County - not sure how true that is, but I often can find 15 yr. old year round.

Not to pick on you, Brad, but to avoid any confusion, that would be Old Town, at Bardstown and Sherwood, a couple of blocks north of Bonnycastle. Or was that your way of keeping the secret? ;) They also have about as good a wine selection as any shop in town, by the way.

No, no - I mean Hometown Liquors, across the street from Cafe 360 and next to Bombay. It's owned by the same family that owns Bombay.

Am I losing my mind??? I grew up right in that neighborhood, have lived here almost all my life and have never heard of Hometown liquors, much less a liquor store at Bardstown and Bonnycastle. What am I missing???

I've lived on Bonnycastle for going on three years now, and Hometown has been there for my whole tenure. It's literally next to Bombay. It's relatively small, with a so-so though not outstanding wine selection, but their liquor selection, especially bourbon, is impressive, as are the prices. Their prices are often $5 or more better than Liquor Barn on high-end bourbons.

I've always called it Bombay, but I can vouch that it is there. What, then, is Bombay?

Bombay sits right on the corner of Bonnycastle and Bardstown, and sells beer, assorted convenience store items, and random packaged South Asian items.

Hometown Liquors is next to it, sharing an internal wall, on Bardstown Road. It sells liquor, wine, and a few assorted mixers only.

No kidding! Apologies for correcting you, then, Brad. You've taught me something today. Never noticed that place. I'll check it out the next time I get my locks shorn at The Place To Go.
