More of "Who has the best lunch in town?"

by Gayle DeM » Thu May 24, 2007 7:55 pm

The old forum had a topic devoted to “Who does the best lunch?” Now, understand that I live way out in the East end, am retired, and, most of the time, lunch alone. Both Seafood Connection and Limestone were mentioned. I heartily agree with those two being on a “best list” but I think there are a few East end places that have been mentioned rarely, if ever: The Alley Cat Café and Adriaan's Around the Table Cuisine!

First let me say, that the Seafood Connection is at the top of my list. I easily grab lunch there once a week, often twice. Additionally, I have never had anything but great lunches at Limestone, and it definitely takes the “atmosphere” award. Their 2nd and 3rd Friday “Lunch Lessons” are one of the best deals in town. Other’s cooking classes cost at least twice as much, and one does not get a complete meal plus “happy hour” wine and drink prices.

So now for the Alley Cat Café and Adriaan's Around the Table Cuisine:

The Alley Cat Café, 11804 Shelbyville Road, serves mainly sandwiches and soup, although they do have a small list of “munchies,” salads, and “pasta & more.” The latter ranges from the obvious pasta dishes to baked salmon. However, in my mind, the best deal, hands down, is the ”half-sandwich with soup or salad.” Half sandwich, my foot! The sandwich is a full sized sandwich, in my mind, being a whole sandwich made on oval shaped bread in what I was raised to call “Vienna loaf style” accompanied by one’s choice of soup or salad. (If one order’s a sandwich from the menu, one is presented with two of these sandwiches. I have never gone beyond the signature soup, “Tuscan sausage-vegetable.” One of the best soups in town, IMO. I couldn’t find one of the take-home menus in my collection, but I believe the “half-sandwich with soup or salad” is a bit more these days then the $5.50 when Robin reviewed it back in April 2003.

Alley Cat Café is a lunch only place when in comes to dining-in, as the hours are 11:00 to 3:00 Monday through Saturday, but I do think they also cater.

Adriaan's Around the Table Cuisine, 14041 Shelbyville Road, is a tiny Mom, Pop, son and daughter place that offers carryout, full service catering, family style freezer meals (20 total meal, 4 each of five kinds for $109) and dining-in. Note, however, that it has but six two-top tables, but they are more than willing to shove tables together as needed. This is not the place to go for a romantic evening, but the food is to-die-for delicious.

But I digress, they have four sandwiches that are, again IMO, among the best in town: meatloaf, beef brisket, Greek or chicken gyro and German pork schnitzel. The first two are $4.95; the second two, $5.95. Why should I wander down the road to Arby’s or Mickey D’s? Actually, they have more sandwich choices, but I have never tried any of the others. Now don’t get me wrong; dine-in is not limited to sandwiches, there are salads, wraps and entrees. The latter menu is quite diverse including Jagerschnitzel, Indonesian Chicken Peanut Satay and Idaho Rainbow Trout. (Did I mention that Adriaan is Dutch; his wife, Lebanese?)

Last but not least, the baklava! Totally made on premise and the best in town! Note, if you’re not in to baklava, the cheesecake is also excellent.

We are totally talking quality food here, besides my dining-in and grabbing carryout, I have been to several parties where they did the catering. It’s right up there with Wiltshire Pantry IMO.

Adriaan's Around the Table Cuisine is open Monday and Tuesday 9:00 to 7:00, Wednesday through Friday 9:00 to 9:00 and Saturday 8:00-2:00.

Good ones, Gayle! Alley Cat is high on my list - If I recall correctly, I've even rated them four stars for doing what they do as well as it can be done. It's been a LONG time since I've been back, though, and I'm glad they're doing well.

Cafe at the Louisville Antique Mall is also very high on my list, and so - at least in my one visit - was Bluegrass Bistro in the Buechel Antique Mall. I understand that Seafood Connection St. Matthews is expanding its menu, which should make a place I love even better.

And we mustn't forget Meridian Cafe, which after many management changes has grown into another super place for lunch; or the many fine fried-fish houses including Stan's, Carolina, Fish House, The Fishery and more.

Of course, a lot of the evening standards are also great for lunch - Jack Fry's, Primo, Proof, etc., ad infinitum, but in polls like this, I assume we're talking about places that specialize in lunch.

You are right, Robin, about the Seafood Conncection St. Matthews expanding their menu. Chef Mike has it all it place, but copies of the new menu are still several weeks away. Sad to say, the Salmon Sliders are gone. However, there are now salmon tacos and shrimp tacos in addition to the fish tacos. Like always, Chef Mike is willing to cook to please, so he made a grilled tilapia taco for a lady while I was eating my grilled salmon taco last Wednesday. Here's the good part, I have been ordering a grilled salmon taco on a weekly basis for months, but now that it is on the regular menu, it is a dollar less! Not only that but it was accompanied by French fried pickled capers. Oooh! I could have eaten them endlessly, like beer nuts, smoked almonds, salted cashews. Get the drift?

Thanks for the update, Gayle. Mike has mentioned this a couple of times, and I'm eager to get back and try the new stuff. I'm surprised the menus are taking so long, though, in this age of desktop publishing and a Kinko's in every city neighborhood. ;)

Don't discount downtown New Albany!

by John NA » Fri May 25, 2007 8:59 am

In great places for lunch don't discount downtown New Albany. We now have three places for lunch.

Federal Hill Cafe has real Italian food, all of which is homemade. It's simple, basic Italian food very well prepared. If you want pasta, meatballs, or Italian sausage, this place really does a nice job. It's pleasant inside and very reasonable. Great lunch spot.

The Bistro in New Albany has a great lunch menu, interesting sandwiches and salads, amazing soups, and excellent specials. I like it because it's not the same old stuff. They also have wonderful service.

Treets, across the street also has nice lunches. They have a variety of sandwiches and daily specials as well as baked 'treats.' I would like this a bit better if they had table service instead of ordering at the counter, but that's not a really huge issue.

One of my favorite places to eat lunch downtown is Safier's. Great food, great people, great value!

Other faves:

New Albany: La Rosita--I'll actually be there later today! Yum!

Downtown: Safier's, 3rd Ave. Cafe, City Cafe

Bardstown Rd: Ramsi's, Flanagan's, Avalon

Frankfort Ave: Shiraz, North End Cafe, Fat Jimmy's

St. Matthews: Meridian Cafe, Cafe Emilie, Stan's

East: Corner Cafe

Ok, now I'm really hungry.
:D
