Pizza and politics - Cindy Sheehan at Rays...

by Nimbus Couzin » Thu Sep 10, 2009 3:25 pm

Pizza and politics tonight at Ray's Monkey House Coffeeshop.

Our crazy pizza chef (bellarmine professor by day) will be whipping up some handmade thin crust vegetarian gourmet pizzas from 6-midnight tonight. As usual, he'll have some mad good toppings like basil, fresh mozzerella, goat cheese, etc, along with a nice roasted garlic sauce. Whole pies or by the slice.

Also, Cindy Sheehan, one of the prominent Iraq war Peace activists and a Gold Star mom (she lost her son Casey in Iraq) will be speaking at seven, followed by a book signing. Come early for a chance to chat informally.

Should be a fun night, whether you're here for the pizza, the politics, or both!

Cheers

I had a slice of this on Monday and it was quite good. More like an italian pizza than any american style. Now as for Cindy - I'll take a pass.

She will definitely keep the crowd down.

We were packed, by the way. So much for Jerry C's theory that "She will definitely keep the crowd down."

It was also standing room only at her Bellarmine talk earlier in the day.

It was fairly emotional at times, with a number of veterans present, including those who - like Cindy - have lost loved ones in Iraq. The press, as well as both the Dems and Repubs, have done a lot of criticism of a woman who is simply fighting for what she believes in. Peace. A mother who dares to ask "for what noble cause" her son died for. Our last president was never able to answer her question, a question she deserves an answer to.

And as my 6 year old son explained to Cindy Sheehan Wednesday, "Peace means no war."

Unfortunately, many of the grownups in our society can't grasp the concept of Peace as well as my six year old can. And they continue to support ongoing wars. Cindy says troops home NOW. I agree.

Cindy ran as an Independent against Nancy Pelosi, and of course had plenty of kind words to say about my upcoming Mayoral campaign. She got 17%, not bad running against the speaker of the house and being outspent 4 to 1.

p.s. We sold more pizza tonight than any night thus far in our relatively new pizza offering!

NImbus,

Your pizza must be the best to draw that kind of crowd.

I notice you mentioned the Bellarmine "standing room only", but failed to post the numbers she drew at UofL.

Here is a quote from the CJ article about her visit to UofL:

"she told the crowd of about 30 people gathered in the Chao Auditorium of the Ekstrom Library that she worried many people who rallied for peace in recent years were protesting more against Bush and his policies than the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Louisvillepeace.org which has a complete listing of her Louisville stops, gave no reason why she cancelled her press conference originally scheduled for Friday 9/11.

Passive/aggressive aside, Jerry C, can you articulate a reason for your comments?

Jerry,
The pizza is great - but the people came to listen to Cindy Sheehan. (then, upon discovering - and smelling - the tasty pizza, they ate it up)

I'm not sure why the turnout at U of L was low. Student apathy? I've noticed that much of the modern "Peace Movement" is older in age. But as a professor at U of L, I can tell you we're hitting the time of the year when students are starting to get serious homework, and starting to get exams, so that could be a factor. Also, she did several talks this week, which would logically lower the turnout at any given event. Organizers counted 62 attendees, by the way. Often reporters arrive late or leave early, so they may have gotten an inaccurate snapshot of the crowd.

In any case, whatever....(maybe you can try answering Roger's questions)

Peace! (that is what Cindy's about, and what I'm about as well....)

I have nothing against Ms. Sheehan, even though we likely disagree more than we agree. Unfortunately, her grief was cravenly exploited by the crowd who were more anti-Bush than anti-war. She is no longer useful to them.

Excellent. That's a reason. I believe it is the wrong reason, but at least it is a reason. Thank you. Paging Jerry C ...
