Nuclear Sub from Corner Cafe is the best sub in town

by Matthew Landan » Tue Sep 08, 2009 7:12 pm

John H. brought me over the 5" Nuclear Sub for lunch today. As the menu describes it: a combination of salami, ham, pepperoni, black olives, green olives, green peppers, onions and mushrooms. This doesn't do this monster of a sub justice. It is so stacked with meats and veggies and cheese that it spills out of it's roll. It's as close as I've ever had in the Derby City to a NY sub or grinder. It has a great blend of flavors and textures and even the 5" is huge. I highly recommend that you get out and try one.

In the little plaza at the corner of Whipp's Mill Road and New Lagrange Road in Lyndon near the railroad crossing.

One hint (or maybe two):

Get the smaller size, unless 2 are eating...

The price includes potato chips. Pay for the side, this sandwich deserves it. I opt for the dilled potato salad...

Unfortunately I don't make it out to Corner Cafe as much as I used to, but their Veggie sub is without a doubt, hands down the BEST VEGGIE sub in town too. The bread is just great!

I haven't been to the Corner Cafe yet, but now that I have read about the Subs, I'll be going soon. I'm always on the lookout for a nice sub. Which brings me to the next part of this e-mail.

Jason's Deli.

Is there a reason why they don't have pepperoni? Or any Salami on the "Build Your Own" menu? There is only one item on the menu with Salami, the Italian Po' Boy. This all seems pretty un-deli-like to me. In my opinion, Salami and Pepperoni are the cornerstones of a good italian sub.

I'm not complaining...I'm questioning.

Later,

Steve

It's probably because they are mimicking in New York deli with their selection and style of sandwiches. As you stated pepperoni and salami are very Italian and would be found in an Italian delicatessen, but are not very likely to be found in a normal New York delicatessen. I think that is because many New York delicatessens are Kosher and I've never seen Kosher salami and pepperoni.

I must concur that indeed this is the best sub in the city, although I have not experienced the true joy of that whopper in some time, I remember it with great fondness. First it's bloddy HUGE!, secondly the flavor profile is fantastic, as I recall the olives and cheese used are incredible. It's a 2 meal deal unless your Dave Z. or Johhny V. and you know who you are.
All of the food at the Corner Cafe is great, they are excellent operators. There is a reason they have been doing great business as long as they have. Damn I want that sub now....

Mark, there are as many Italian delis in NYC as there are Jewish/kosher delis. Maybe I'm being nitpicky, but if you don't think Italian delis are New York delis, you never saw our neighborhood in Queens.

I guess maybe my wording was a little hard to understand. I was basically pointing out that there were two major kinds of delis in New York, Jewish/Kosher and Italian and that each one had its own types of food.

Actually, Salami is pretty common in the Kosher delis.

Hebrew National (They answer to a higher authority.)

This is not your typical hard salami, like Genoa....but it is pretty darned tasty.

I'd like to find some Hebrew National salami, I havent seen any in my travels around L'Ville.

Thanks,

Steve

Just got back from getting one. Delicious, as usual. I always get the large, eat half of it and then try to something with the leftovers. Tonight, nuclear salad!

Steve,

You may be in luck- I think they have it at Costco now. Recently, I picked up some large rolls of Hebrew
National product in a display case, hoping it was their bologna- which I love. But it was a different product- I'm pretty sure it was salami. I'll try to remember to verify the next time I'm there.
