Uh, weird. It's his business, so he is sure welcome to run it how he wants, but FWIW he lost a good bit of business on Friday.

My building was hosting a Biergaten fest, so a friend tried to locate Sergios to buy a relatively substantial amount of beer for this, and after circling 4 times trying to find it, she gave up and Old Town and Cumberland ended up getting our business.

Those of us that haven't been to the new location, but would surely like to check it out, might feel a little like our business isn't wanted. Should I expect to see a password or something soon?

When I tried to open the link in the first post of this thread(yesterday) it asked me for a password. I have never had to that before with the sergios site. Today the link seems to be working.

That said...his site still can leave you with a FTW feeling.

Well, what I actually meant was whether a password will be required for entry into the physical location. No posted sign, no posted hours, sounds like a speakeasy to me. . .

No,that wont be necessary. Just look for the place with all the flags in the window. It was common for the old location to look as though it wasn't open either. Just part of the Sergios experience.

From the Sergios site....

Due to erroneous information splattered all over publications ranging from the daily rag to Der Spiegl, we are not officially open. The Senior Management Team and myself have decided that we would like to cater only to you people who have an interest in great beers and food, and most of all, can read. This is a pleasant change from the previous location if you know what I mean. So be prepared to not see an open sign or even the name of the bar outside. We invite you literate people to continue spreading the word to your quality friends and associates. It is so pleasant for me to hear intelligent conversations and we intend to keep it that way. Isn't that more appealing to you, the patron, enjoy yourselves in a safe environment with other educated people. Those who do not fit the criteria mentioned above, will be asked for their membership cards. When they cannot produce one, they physically kicked to the curb, or something similar.

In the near future we will:

1. Have over 1 dozen unique kegs arriving from Belgium
2. Host our first beer dinner
3. Make available our full selection of over 1000 bottled beers
4. Discuss and plan spring trip to Belgium
5. Print new dinner menus with the help of Chris Miller
6. Print a new up-to-date beer list with descriptions also with the help of Chris Miller

I would say it's difficult to impossible to "get" the Sergio's experience without a good sense of humor.

I have an unrelated question, though: Sergio's is a beer bar. You seemed to be looking for a source of package beer to go. Can they do that?

I was told the other day he has, near the back door, two large sets of shelving that have beer to go. As I understand one side has German brew and other side is English ales. I haven't seen this improvement yet for myself though, but will report on it soon. Matthew from DCE may know more about it than I,are you out there Matthew?

under a malt beverage license an establishment can serve beer by the glass or packaged to go.
Not sure if Sergio has a malt beverage license or a restaurant license. Not sure if Sergio will be selling bottled beer to go but I think it would make great sense for him to sell singles and mixed sixers. What makes sense to me may not make sense to Sergio. I'll bring it up with him the next time I'm in there.

i did see the beer shelves and it appears as if it's set up to sell beer to go...

On another note I had a great beef burrito there and a $2 two hearted ale last night. He serves some of the best Mexican food I've had on this side of the river.

On thursday he'll be serving $3 pours of Stone's Arrogant bastard ale.

I get it about the "experience," and the eccentricities (sp? word?) doesn't really put me off. It's just statements like, "The Senior Management Team and myself have decided that we would like to cater only to you people who have an interest in great beers and food, and most of all, can read" that put me off. I like to think I have a good sense of humor for the most part, but really feel that if I go there (and can manage to find it) there's a chance I'll mess something up and get the Soup Nazi or Pat's (Philly) treatment. It's just a little unnerving.

Re: package beer to go, my friend called ahead to be sure they were selling to go. She was told yes, but unfortunately the manner in which she was informed this what prevented her from calling back to try to find them after circling for 30 minutes. Sheesh, she wasn't trying to find an easy place to buy Miller Lite.

As someone who possess a questionable and often misunderstood (not to mention occasionally weak) sense of humor, I have no choice but to accept similar attempts from a fellow traveler.

One business model is to seek out as much business as possible by seeming attractive to as many customers as possible. Another, less popular approach, is to appeal only to those people you care to appeal too. The lingering question is: "How specific can you make that group before making it too small to pay the bills?" Only time will allow for an answer, but 1) I think Sergio is doing a decent gate and 2) I don't think he would do it any other way.

Man, I need to stop back by there. Anybody been going on a specific night of the week?
