Honey Crisp apples.....

by Becky M » Wed Sep 02, 2009 2:17 am

I read something on Honey Crisp apples the other day and am really interested in them now. I had never heard of them and they are supposed to be one of the best with an awesome crunch. Has anyone had them before, and most importantly, where can i find them?

Becky, Meijers usually carries an impressive selection of apples. Paul's Fruit Market would be a good possibility too.

According to http://www.honeycrisp.com, it looks like these are just starting to come into season, so you may have to wait a few weeks to find them locally. But, because of their exceptionally long "shelf life", they should be available for months to come.

Wikipedia says the Honeycrisp offers "sweetness, firmness, and tartness [which] makes it an ideal apple for eating raw. The Honeycrisp also retains its pigment well and boasts a relatively long shelf life when stored in cool, dry conditions."

They are GREAT! Beware...they are also usually pricey ($1.5 + a pound). The apples are pretty big too. They have a wonderful crunch to them and a nice sweetness, but almost like a cross between a pear and an apple. I buy them occasionally as a treat for myself.

I second Paul's. I've had the Honeycrisp apples, and they are really great! They also usually have Pink Lady apples, which are my personal favorite.

I purchased Honey Crisps all last fall and into winter at Fresh Market, but i haven't looked for them yet this year, because I'm still pigging out on Pluots which have been better than ever this year IMHO.

They are pretty good, but I prefer the Pink Lady apples. It was mentioned in another thread that the Honey Crisps would be coming in late September.

If you ever happen to be in Gatlinburg, TN in the fall there is an apple farm, Kyle Carver Orchard, that grows around 120 varieties and makes fresh cider from all the different types, amazing place to check out if you are an apple fan. Being a Knoxville native, it was a beautiful drive to get the perfect apples and best cider!

I prefer the Pink Lady apples by far. A tie for second would be Jonagolds and Honeycrisp, though.

They are my favorite apples by far. Value Market in mid city mall has them pretty often. They are pricey but totally worth it. Get one of those apple slicers and your are fully prepared for apple heaven.

My husband brought home some from Kroger (Highlands) a few weeks ago. I don't know if they still have them.

I love Pink Lady apples, but Honey Crisp are rare treats! We usually get them from Paul's or ValuMarket. Can't wait for them to come into season!

Garden Gate Fruit Market at the corner of Breckenridge Lane and Bardstown Road has had Honey Crisp and McIntosh apples for weeks. It must be a good year for corn. The Silver Queen white corn that they display under crushed ice is the best we have had in years and contains no worms or bugs as is common this time of the year. Unfortunately tomatoes seem to have been better last year.

I love Honeycrisp apples. I've seen them in Meijers and Walmart.
