Good Eats in Paducah--help me to decide

by TanyaD » Thu May 24, 2007 10:52 am

So, I'm going to Paducah on Saturday and am looking for a nice, very casual, inexpensive place to eat after we leave the convention we're attending. After exhaustive research, I've narrowed our choices down to either Starnes BBQ or Flamingo Row. Has anyone been to either/both? Good? Overhyped? Do you know of a better place? Nothing fancy, mind you, the SO will not wear anything but jeans and a T-shirt. TIA!

No contest. Flamingo Row hands down!

Over the past 10 years I have spent many, many, many, many, many months trying cases in Paducah and Graves County. I've eaten in literally every decent (and some doggy) restaurants in town.

Starnes is good BBQ, but just that, BBQ. Flamingo Row is an experience: a little bit of Key West dropped into Western Kentucky, both in the decor and in the menu. The service has always been great, drinks are great (not much wine, though) and the menu is truly unique -- all great. When my wife comes to visit on weekends (we live in Brandenburg), that's our first stop.

Make sure you try the quesadilla appetizer. The black bean soup is terrific, and virtually everything on the menu is a delight. The stuffed breads are unique and delicious (but the run out often -- made daily on the premises.)

Make sure you go to the right place, though. They are no longer on Broadway. They moved 17 months ago behind the Home Depot, which is off of Hinkleville Rd. at Exit 4 of I-24.

Address is 2640 Perkins Creek Dr.
Phone 270-442-0460

Why don't you contact me privately and I'll follow up both on Paducah dining and directions if you need them.

Thanks, Vince--I already got the directions from Yahoo! maps, so I think we're good. I'm really looking forward to it! I'll let you know how it goes when I get back!

I just wanted to give a second to Flamingo Row. I haven't been in a few years, but used to go quite a bit when I lived in Western KY. It is a great atmosphere and the food is pretty good as well. The stuffed breads are wonderful and I was never disappointed with any order (except when they ran out of stuffed bread). I wish I could remember what the name of the dish was that I used to get there, all I can remember was the perfectly caramelized onions. The drinks are pretty good too
I'll be checking for your take on the place. Have fun.

On your way to or from Paducah you have to try Patti's 1880's Settlement.
The pork chops are huge and wonderful! The desserts are to die for! We made this a special stop each time we went to Murray to see our kids while they attended MSU and still try to find an excuse to take the drive down there. From what I remember it is about 30-45 minutes before you reach Paducah. Make reservations--it gets very crowded!

We ended up going to Flamingo Row, since we got out of the conference too late to try Patti's. However, we were very pleased with the service and food! I got the Caribbean Dip (roast beef and cheese with jalapeno mayo and au jus) with chive-bacon potato salad and the bf got (I forget which) burger, which came with really good handmade fries and neon green iguana honey mustard sauce. I even got carded for my Palmtini even though I am 37! Our waitress was incredibly friendly, and I highly recommend them if you are ever in that area.

I'm so happy you enjoyed it -- I get a bit anxious whenver I recommend a spot.

And kudos twice: 1) for the successful trip and 2) for still being carded at 37!
