I don't buy concerns about minors purchasing alcohol; are they trying to make me believe that minors want to buy organic, artisanal liquor that costs a bit more than their weekly allowance? It smacks of protectionism, and as much as I like a good bourbon, it makes the grump in me want to boycott it.

The FTC didn't buy into that argument either, but it doesn't stop about 50% of the states from continuing these arcane laws. You don't suppose hefty campaign donations from the wholesalers has anything to do with that, do you?![]()

I think it goes beyond issues of taxation.
I can, and do, buy guns and related products over the internet and that is a hell of a lot easier than having my favorite wines shipped to me. I buy many other items over the internet without taxation issues. Here in Indiana there is a place for me to declare items purchased where a tax is due on my Income Tax return.
BTW, my favorite wines are low production items which the major distributors won't handle but they don't want me to have access to so they can preserve their oligopoly. If the wines were available through the 3 tier system, I'd buy them locally, but the market just does not work when it come to these types of items.
Best,
