Root Liquor

by Eliza W » Fri Aug 28, 2009 8:35 pm

A friend from N C told me about a liquor called Root. It's apparently a very old recipe from the 1700s, basically root beer for the big kids. Sounds great. Do any local liquor stores carry it? I found it on the Internet, but I'd prefer local.

I did some digging on their website, and it shows that this is available in Indiana, but not currently available in Kentucky. When I get in the store on Monday, I'll look in the books and will find out who is distributing this in the state.

Thank you. The idea of a not sweet or carbonated, highly alcoholic rootbeer gives me shivers.

I tasted this in Philly a few weeks back and thought it was interesting. It had kind of old time Root Beer/ Sasparilla flavor to it with a fair amount of alcohol. It seemed like something that had some serious potential for a creative mixoligist. I intended to buy a bottle but my lack of foresight combined with PA's odd liquor laws prevented that from becoming a reality. It'd be great to see someone carry it around here.

Well, I did some digging, and it turns out that their website was in error about being in Indiana. Apparently they list all the available states that an online liquor store can ship to. I don't think they liked it when I told them that it is illegal to ship alcohol into Indiana and that they might want to fix their listing.

So, unfortunately, we cannot get this in for you. I did leave a message with the person in charge of this about my interest in the product, so we might be able to do something eventually, but nothing right now. Sorry to deliver the bad news.

Hi Todd,
While this is generally true, it is possible for out of state wineries to ship wine into Indiana provided the winery jumps through enough hoops such as getting a direct shipper's permit, remit taxes, etc.

Todd, thanks for trying.

I'd just like to point out the irony of the conservative, supposedly free market politicians in Frankfort deciding that I don't have the right to purchase liquor over the internet. I don't buy concerns about minors purchasing alcohol; are they trying to make me believe that minors want to buy organic, artisanal liquor that costs a bit more than their weekly allowance? It smacks of protectionism, and as much as I like a good bourbon, it makes the grump in me want to boycott it.

The FTC didn't buy into that argument either, but it doesn't stop about 50% of the states from continuing these arcane laws. You don't suppose hefty campaign donations from the wholesalers has anything to do with that, do you?

If they could figure out a smooth and easy way for each state government to make their taxes on the transaction, they would never have an issue with shipping these products anywhere. They assume that you will simply buy another alcoholic product in place of the item you wanted shipped in, and they will make all the tax monies that they expect.

Todd-
I think it goes beyond issues of taxation.
I can, and do, buy guns and related products over the internet and that is a hell of a lot easier than having my favorite wines shipped to me. I buy many other items over the internet without taxation issues. Here in Indiana there is a place for me to declare items purchased where a tax is due on my Income Tax return.
BTW, my favorite wines are low production items which the major distributors won't handle but they don't want me to have access to so they can preserve their oligopoly. If the wines were available through the 3 tier system, I'd buy them locally, but the market just does not work when it come to these types of items.

Actually court rulings have struck down state laws banning the shipment of wine. The problem is that many producers and distributors haven't seen the ruling. There are however several companies in California that you can have your wine shipped to and they will ship it to you! Here's one I've used for several of my allocations: http://buffalo.winecountrywebs.com/ they provide very good service and the FedEx deliveryman just smiles when he makes a delivery!
