Bud test-markets "world's lightest beer" in Louisville

by Robin Garr » Wed Aug 26, 2009 7:45 am

You cannot make this stuff up ...

Now adults in Louisville who want to enjoy beer without feeling guilty about the calories can twist open a SELECT 55, the world's lightest beer.

Louisville is only one of 15 exclusive markets in the U.S. where the newly launched brand is currently available. A smooth, light golden lager with 55 calories and 1.9 carbohydrates per each 12-ounce serving, SELECT 55 answers a growing demand among a segment of adult drinkers who are seeking lower-calorie alcohol beverages to complement their busy lifestyles. The brand offers an unparalleled clean, crisp flavor with fewer calories than any other beer currently available.

A news release regarding SELECT 55 is enclosed below; high-resolution photos are also available. Please let me know if you are interested in talking with a brand manager, or to request product samples. I'd be happy to help.

Thanks, again, for your time and consideration.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SELECT 55 OFFERS A LIGHTER SIDE OF LIFE OPTION

Anheuser-Busch Debuts World’s Lowest-Calorie Beer

ST. LOUIS (Aug. 10, 2009) – Today, Anheuser-Busch launched SELECT 55, the world’s lightest beer, in select test markets spanning the U.S. A smooth, light golden lager with 55 calories and 1.9g carbohydrates per each 12-ounce serving, SELECT 55 answers a growing demand among a segment of adult drinkers who are seeking lower-calorie alcohol beverages to complement their busy lifestyles.

Whether adult drinkers are looking for light refreshment after a busy day or if they simply enjoy delicious calorie-conscious foods and beverages, SELECT 55 offers an unparalleled clean, crisp flavor with fewer calories than any other beer currently available.

“SELECT 55 is ideal for adults who want to enjoy beer without feeling guilty about the calories,” said Pat McGauley, vice president of Innovation, Anheuser-Busch, Inc. “Perfect for a variety of occasions, adults will enjoy SELECT 55 at a double-header baseball game, while grilling on a hot summer day or relaxing at home with friends.”

Featuring a light golden color, SELECT 55 is made with caramel malts and a blend of imported and domestic hopping. Brewed to complement the full-flavor of Budweiser SELECT, SELECT 55 features a unique recipe that gives the beer its crisp finish with aroma notes of toasted malt and subtle hopping.

SELECT 55 is available in 15 markets across the country including: Tampa, Ft. Myers, Orlando (FL), Chicago, Peoria (IL), Louisville, Green Bay, Bloomington (IN), Cincinnati/Dayton, Des Moines (IA), San Diego, Dallas, Austin, Wichita Falls (TX) and Arizona.

Brewed at Anheuser-Busch’s St. Louis brewery, SELECT 55 is available in 12-ounce, clear signature crown glass bottles in 6- and 12-packs, and 12-ounce aluminum cans in 12- and 18-packs.

Based in St. Louis, Anheuser‑Busch is the leading American brewer, holding a 49.2 percent share of U.S. beer sales. The company brews the world’s largest-selling beers, Budweiser and Bud Light. Anheuser‑Busch also owns a 50 percent share in Grupo Modelo, Mexico’s leading brewer. Anheuser-Busch ranked No. 1 among beverage companies in FORTUNE Magazine’s Most Admired Global Companies list in 2009. Anheuser‑Busch is one of the largest theme park operators in the United States, is a major manufacturer of aluminum cans and one of the world’s largest recyclers of aluminum cans. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the leading global brewer, and continues to operate under the Anheuser-Busch name and logo. The Miller exec who was whining because Bud stole their idea again is the best thing about this beer.

Bud Select 55 is 9 better than MGD 64.

Anheuser-Busch is still based in St. Louis. It is now a wholly owned subsidiary, however, and thus its parent company is based in Europe. From the release: "The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the leading global brewer, and continues to operate under the Anheuser-Busch name and logo."

I'd rather drink muddy water & sleep in a hallow log than drink this schwill.

Have they been to Louisville? This is not a town that embraces "light" anything.

I've had low calorie chocolate cake and that tasted like crap too.

I don't get the connection in the press release between the demand for lower calorie drinks and busy lifestyles. Am I correctly reading that to mean people are skipping on calories to make up for the exercise they don't get? So, busy lifestyles means either 1)laziness or 2)misplaced priorities? Whatever it is, I'd rather be fat than drink bad beer. And you can remind me of that in 20 years when my metabolism no longer can keep up. But hey, that's why I cycle.

One word: Vodka.

Robin Garr wrote:Notes of toasted malt and subtle hopping.

Translation: Water.

Personally, I find the idea that any bud product possesses "subtle hopping" to be an understatement on par with the notion that hunters lovingly pat seals on their heads to claim their pelts. (That was for you John Hagan! :D )

"Anheuser Busch is one of the largest theme park operators in the United States,"

Maybe they should stick to that instead of trying to brew beer. They might actually be good at running amusement parks.

Matthew-
Well said. All this "busy lifestyle" jargon is nonsense. As you said, more likely to be misplaced priorities and/or lack of basic organization skill than busy-ness. The phrase makes me shake my head and roll my eyes. .

Okay, I rarely drink beer, and when I do, I usually choose a good porter or lager.

However, I think that there is a place for this kind of product. My father is 70 years old, and he's an avid runner. You can hardly accuse him of being lazy; he still runs 1/2 marathons. He's also a diabetic, and no amount of running is going to change that. He drinks low-carb beer because he loves beer, but he doesn't like giving too much sugar to his diabetic body. It isn't all about being fat. Now, I'd never drink this stuff myself, but I see a place for it.

Man, make one seal joke.....
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.
