Gourmet Beef Jerky

by Steve R » Sat Aug 22, 2009 1:11 pm

I am looking for some good gourmet Beef Jerky. Something beyond the hickory smoke/peppered/teriyaki you find everywhere. Loves truck stop in Shepherdsville has a huge selection, but that is a good drive unless I am going out to Zappo's. Does anyone produce it locally? I have had that guy's that sells it in and out of shops and restaurants on Bardstown Rd. and it is excellent, but he is hard to track down if you don't work on Bardstown Rd. Any ideas anyone?

Ronnie and Pam Mingua, along with Curtis, Holly, and Cannon Mackley, would like for you to experience their all-natural beef jerky.

The process began in the bluegrass fields of Paris, Kentucky in June 1994, when Ronnie began selling his beef jerky to local farmers. His recipe and business is now becoming a family tradition, passed down from generation to generation. Made the old-fashion way, hand-sliced, not chopped or formed, their beef jerky has grown beyond local customers, and they would now like to serve you

Rusty (the guy who sells jerky around Bardstown road), comes into Sweet Surrender every now and then for chocolate cake. Next time I see him, I'll tell him he should come join the forum! I know this isn't a site for blatant promotion, but it would be a great way to be able to contact someone who has no storefront...

I think I also need to head over to Paul's and try the Mingua jerky as well.

Mingua is the best selling jerky from The Emporium.

Give Mingua Bros. a try. I love it. I have recently started seeing it at Thornton's in town much to my checking account's dismay. Before then I would stock up anytime I had cause to be in the Lexington area. They offer a mild, hot and Cajun. I'm not a big fan of the Cajun but that could be because I am slightly bitter about them replacing the teriyaki flavor with it. Your mileage may vary.

Be bitter no more Michael N. I have been emailing Mingua about the demise of the Teriyaki flavor, which is probably the most wonderful jerky they make. They say are going to start making it again. Perhaps they are just telling me that so I quit flooding their email box with wailing emails...but let's hope. Drop them an email and let them know the Teriyaki people are still out here and ready to buy. I agree, while the other flavors are ok, it ain't Teriyaki...

WOOT!

I emailed them a couple of times and got no reply. Don't get me wrong, I am happy to have the mild and the hot. But Cajun was just no substitute for the teriyaki.

Thanks, this is a great start. I may try to stay away from the Mingua "dog" jerky. I understand that they are dog treats but some people may be confused by the wording. If anyone sees "Rusty" tell him to join and PM me and maybe we could meet on a street corner for score.

Thanks gang!

It's the best dog treat I have ever tasted. Far superior to Milk Bones.

We carry it at Keg Liquors as well. Mild, Cajun, and Hot. I'll bug them about the teriyaki as as well. The more pushing the better.

My Uncle Red lives in Mt. Washington and makes Red's Best Ky Proud, but he's not certified (too much $$$ and hassle, plus something about compromising the quality), so he does exactly like Rusty does and hops around town with a basket. He actually has a woman or two that help him and make a few of the jerky dollars. If you ever get a chance to try it, it's outstanding jerky and he's been making it since he retired as an engineer many many years ago. I recently had exactly this discussion ~ jerky from the streets doesn't seem nearly as good as black market jerky.
