I appreciate customer service that is attentive and friendly w/o being intrusive...that's not an easy thing to do, but servers (and managers) who can master that skill are a valuable asset to any restaurant....my two pet peeves:

1) Servers who refer to guests as "you guys" ("How're you guys doin' tonight?"; "Can I get you guys anything else?")....I realize it's an attempt to be friendly and informal, and in some dining environments it may work (e.g., sports bar/restaurant), but not in more upscale establishments...

2) Managers who roam from table to table asking about the meal...maybe it's all in how this is executed...I do enjoy talking w/owners and managers informally (as I did the other evening at Irish Rover Too, in LaGrange), and chains are probably more guilty of this and it just seems forced and mechanical (which it probably is)...I would prefer management that is repsonsive to issues that might arise than one who asks the scripted question....
