We finally made it to Zaytun on Saturday, and definitely have a new favorite neighborhood joint. We arrived a little after 8:00, in advance of the couple we were meeting, and the place was hopping. The only available table was a high-top in the back. The gentleman who greeted us (the owner, I'm pretty sure. . .) kindly offered that to us, and said he would seat us at a four-top as soon as one opened up.
He immediately took our drink orders. They were running a special on Salmon Creek wines, $8.00/bottle, so we went that route. It wasn't the best wine on earth, but the chardonnay was very drinkable and refreshing after the sweltering day. They kindly kept it chilled for us between glasses. Our waitress showed up soon after for appetizer orders, and we got the sampler version of hummus - two different kinds, one very traditional and one with a nice heat to it. Both were very good, as was the accompanying pita.
The other couple showed up, and we were quickly sat at a table. I had the gyro with tomatoes, sauteed (actually, more like caramelized) onions and tziki. This was perhaps the best gyro I've ever had, and it was monstrous. I was a big fan of the tziki - nice taste, and pureed (I don't like tziki with chunks of cucumber in it). My wife got the . . . forgetting the name, but little beef sausage kind of things, also in a pita with lettuce and tomato. This dish was nearly as good as the gyro. We finished with baklava, which was of very high quality, and well stuffed with pistachios. Our vegetarian dining-mates enjoyed their dishes, and were particularly impressed with the mixed olives they got to go - a big tub for only $8.
For the two of us, wine, appetizer, two entrees, and dessert came to a little over $40 with a nice tip for great service. Unbelievable.
