I just don't get it thread!!!

by Ron Taglieri » Tue May 22, 2007 9:30 pm

This thread is dedicated to your personal experiences clashing with that of society in general. Feel free to name anything you do not like, but the world seems to love.

Here are some of mine:

1. Delivered pizza - Always tastes soggy to me regardless of whom brings it. Unless drunk, I would never order. If I want convenience, I would throw in a Digiorno. Otherwise, go to a Tony Boom Bozz.

2. Lynn's - Not bad, but I do not get the Mecca-like travels to the place. Is it the crazy hats? There also always seems to be a wait. To me, it feels a bit like going to Rocky Horror Picture Show, where half the thrill is saying you were there.

3. Z's - Again, very good, but I would say it does not stand above other places in the city on the traditional 3 1/2 star list. Also, their service is a bit too intrusive for my taste. There is no need to ask how everything is each trip to the table. It does not really get much better or worse after the first time.

4. Wine bars - After the first 4 or 5 glasses, I could pour Mad Dog in someone's glass and they would probably not know the difference. It seems everytime I have been at one, the customers look in desperate need of guidance from the staff. Also, as a non-wine drinker, they seem to seem a bit disappointed when you ask what iced teas they offer.

5. $5 ice cream - Is it that much better than the stuff you get at home? I don't like ice cream that much, so I might be off here.

An over-attentive server. I SWEAR TO GOD. Why some people like their server to check in on them and chat with them every other minute just makes me flabbergasted. I didn't go out to eat to chat with anyone other than who I can with.

Guests that order a steak medium rare but 'don't want to see any blood' are interesting
Similarly, guests that order Ahi Tuna well, but 'don't cook it so long that it gets dry'

....smelling the cork from a wine bottle always tickles me, too.

Very real past experiences, as close to verbatim as I can recall.....

'We have a show to get to in 10 minutes. We will need 8 seperate checks and we are all paying with credit cards.'--- for the uniniitiated, unless you're in a restaurant that routinely caters to a theatre crowd, let your server know beforehand of your agenda and it wil seriously make getting out in time a lot easier.

'......but I know the owner and I've been coming here for two years.' ---Thank you for your loyal patronage, sir, but we've only been open for six weeks.

'I ate here 12 years ago and I don't remember things costing this much.' ----you don't say

Just a few things off the top of my head.

HUGE portions. I don't want a big gob of stuff to bring home. If the dish was great at the restaurant, it won't be as good after the trek home, resting in the fridge overnight, and zapped in the microwave the next day.

Being brought the check without being asked if we want to order dessert. I am a sweets person and it's really not smart to deprive me of my dessert  . And as a server, wouldn't you want me to order dessert in order to bump up the check total and get a higher tip?
Also, when servers bring my 7 year old son a drink in a large adult size glass. It's gotten to the point where I have to specifically ask for a kid's cup with a lid!

Lynn's

Last time I went to Lynn's for lunch, she was asking $10.00 plus for that omelet that bested Bobby Flay. Over-rated!

Being given the check without asking for it and that insipid "I'll just take this whenever you're ready".

Not to be argumentative, but this one has never bothered me. I'd rather have the guy discreetly drop the check than make me search for him when I'm ready to go. And maybe I'm clueless, but I do not take the arrival of the check as a hint that it's time for me to go because they're turning the table. If he says, "Whenever you're ready," I accept that as a truthful statement, and leave when I'm ready to leave. :)

Now, among nitpicks that I do take seriously, I'd include:

* Pacing too fast or too weird - bringing out salads before the apps are done, main dishes before salads are done. Or not brining out courses at the same time (although this is a two-edged sword, as I don't want my delicate fish dish sitting under heat and overcooking while they're still at work on my partner's dish. Just do it right and fire 'em and get 'em out together, okay?

* Coffee WITH dessert. Not after dessert. Not before dessert. I want hot coffee to sip with my dessert course. Is that so hard to understand?

* And speaking of coffee, if you're going to offer espresso at all, do it right. Use espresso roast coffee, and have a real espresso machine and know how to use it! Or don't pretend to offer espresso service if you're going to send out a little cup of strong, bitter regular coffee with no foam of crema on top. You can leave the little piece of lemon peel in the kitchen, too, as far as I'm concerned ...

YES!!! That makes me nuts also. Even when I ask for the coffee to be served with the dessert it just goes in one ear and out the other. No particular restaurant, just everywhere it seems.

Hmm,

Delivered pizza is better than frozen pizza. Then again almost anything is better than frozen pizza.

I really do like Lynn's. I would agree that it is overpriced but I've always found the food to be really good, a bit different, and I never leave there hungry. If nothing else the place is just so incredibly original that it makes the trip worthwhile....for me. Everyone's mileage varies on this.

When the server takes the check, takes a peek into the folder (to see if it's cash or a credit card) and asks, "Do you need change?"

I never thought it was that hard to bring change, and to then let me figure out the tip on my own. If the bill came to $15 but all I had was a $20, then I don't want to leave you all of the change, and that question makes it sound like the server expects me to leave a $5 tip. (Numbers are made up for griping purposes.) And if I did want to leave a massive tip, I would either say so as the server took the folder ("Keep the change!") or just ignore the folder once it came back to me. So the outcome is the same no matter what; please don't ask if I need change. Just bring it and let the chips fall where they may.

Another one is when I order water with my meal. "I'll have a water, please," I say. "JUST water?" the server replies. I'm not ordering water because it's free; I'm ordering it because I like drinking it and it's good for me. I'm sorry that it won't bump the bill up, but I usually order multiple courses and dessert, so the server has just insulted me by implying I'm doing something wrong by not spending $2 on a soda. Grr.

Servers should never ask if you need change. They should always assume that you do and bring it. If I want them to keep the change, I will tell them when they pick up the check and the cash.

Where to start...hmmmm ok...Robin:

Robin Garr wrote:* Pacing too fast or too weird - bringing out salads before the apps are done, main dishes before salads are done. Pacing: This is something that I hate too. As a server. Which means that I have no choice on whether it happens or not, yet I am the one who pays the price when it does. I'm not sure why this tends to go down, but I'm pretty sure there's a legitimate reason. I can't imagine the kitchen wants this to happen, either way. I've never worked at a restaurant where this didn't happen at least occasionally.

Coffee WITH desert: I certainly offer coffee with desert. I'm not sure exactly what to say here other than hey, I run all of my own food, so I need to make 2 trips, coffee then desert. Sorry. When you're dealing with tiny things like creamer, coffees, sugar, assorted espresso stuff, desert spoons etc...it becomes difficult to do it all in one trip.

Jon K wrote:Being given the check without asking for it and that insipid "I'll just take this whenever you're ready".

I dunno, I just do that so people have the check and pay when they want...when you have a 6 table section, and one table's done, I feel like I'm annoying the people who are done if I check in every couple minutes while they chat, plus if I'm really busy it's not really feasible. I wouldn't take it the wrong way...

Holly Cummings wrote:When the server takes the check, takes a peek into the folder (to see if it's cash or a credit card) and asks, "Do you need change?"

I think at this point, most good servers have the sense to state "I'll be right back with your change" just to make sure. This may surprise you, but I've actually been yelled at numerous times for not assuming they DIDN'T want change...I think servers are pretty much screwed on this one as there are people who feel strongly on both sides of this issue...at least if you state it, it gives the customer a chance to verbally change it...
