Julie & Julia

by David Lange » Fri Aug 07, 2009 8:56 am

I had the privilige of attending an advance screening of the movie "Julie & Julia" last night and I would give it a recommendation for any foodie that's on the forum. Meryl Streep does a great job portraying Julia, and I learned a lot of information pertaining to her life and how she developed her passion for cooking. One of the highpoints of the film was the inclusion of the "French Chef" episode from Saturday Night Live featuring Dan Ackroyd as Julia. That piece is still a classic. The theater was packed and everyone I talked with said it made them want to get home and start cooking.

I took my mother in law with me last night to see it..and loved it! Laughed a lot! Great movie for foodies. Made me rather hungry by the end. I really want a cream pie now.

My daughter and I attended the showing last night also! It really gave insight into Julia's life. I'm embarrassed that I didn't know more about her history. I loved Julie's husband and his ravenous approach to her food! I know husbands just like that! Heard quite a few people say that they were starving after the movie and trying to figure out where to go! All in all, it was a great night!

We just got back. At the end of the movie, the audience applauded. How often does that happen?
Waaaaaay better than the two stars in the local review.

Both my beautiful bride and I had just finished reading Julia Child "My Life in France" just before we went to see the movie. Frankly, we would have been very happy with that whole book being the movie. All of the scenes with Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci were spot on depictions from the France book. The story about the blog was OK, but all Julia would have been sublime.

If you haven't had a chance to read "My Life in France" go pick it up, you won't be disappointed.

We finally got a chance to see this movie this afternoon and to my surprise it was quite good. I am naturally anxious when a movie is made of a real person's life due to the "need" to embellish to add "drama." I was also skeptical that I would find anything to enjoy in the non-Julia Child portions of the film.

Happily I can report that I found the entire movie to be quite enjoyable and the portions with Julia Child were particularly inspiring. I do not own her cookbooks, nor, sadly and rather embarrassingly, do I possess much knowledge about her, however I am now rather curious.

This is a good film for people passionate about food. I recommend.

I agree, would have loved to just watch all Julia, all France :)

Loved the movie though, and planned on purpose to come home and cook a glorious butter-filled dinner! :D
