Who serves GOOD mushrooms?

by Adam Smith » Mon Aug 03, 2009 8:19 am

I have tried time and time again to enjoy mushrooms, but I have never liked them; until Saturday. I had shitakes in a soup at the Dragon King's Daughter and they were really good. Meaty an earthy, I actually enjoyed their taste, assuming it was them and not the broth. Anyway the point of my thread is to see if there are any dishes including mushrooms that I must try, because so far I have had ONE good mushroom experience... two if you count when I first saw a Pink Floyd concert DVD in 10th grade. 8)

I LOVE the bruschetta with mushrooms appetizer at Porcini:

Bruschetta Con Funghi
Sheltowee Farms Wild Mushrooms, Caramelized Shallots, Melted Fontina,
Grilled Tuscan Garlic Bread
....And be faithful to

Mushroom fumé soup at Equus and Jack's. Amazing. A rich, creamy mushroom puree that gives you the pure essence of mushroom flavor ... it's one of their longtime signature dishes, and I can't imagine that anyone could help but like it.

It's also available canned (done by a local company), but to be honest, the canned is not up to the fresh version served in the restaurant.

I second the mushroom fume' at Equus. I HATE mushrooms, but I could have eaten that soup all day. Also, if you like spicy food, the Chili Mushrooms at DakShin are excellent. They're crispy-fried with onions, peppers, and a ton of chili flake, and are served with several different condiments, on the side.

Definitely try the mushrooms en croute on the lunch menu at Bank Street Brewhouse. A revelation!

Stuffed mushrooms at Impellizzeri's. Mushroom caps stuffed with homemade italian sausage, covered with garlic butter and mozzarella cheese, then baked to a golden brown in the oven. Very addictive!

De La Torre's has a remarkably good Champinones a la Plancha or Sauteed Mushrooms, Lightly Flavored With Garlic and Chorizo. These are full flavored mushrooms though and may not be for you if you're still in the introductory stages of fungi assimilation, but they are awfully good.

They also frequently have a very good cream based mushroom soup with a hint of blue cheese as a nightly special. This is a little milder flavor, but also equally delicious.

And off subject for a second, La Bodega is getting close to reopening and is bigger than before and absolutely beautiful. Got a tour the other night and everybody is getting excited.

Club Grotto has one of our favorite starters in the Exotic Mushroom Strudel that is also often served with their steaks as a side. It is a yet undeciphered combination of mushrooms, phyllo, and a binding agent that may have some cream cheese. I'm assuming that they still have this since they have had a menu change recently and I've not been able to get up there since the change over.

Probably three of my favorite mushroom dishes in the city.

I second the mushrooms at Impellizzeri's literally Doused and "COVERED with garlic butter".

The mushroom Empanadas at Seviche are good.

The Hongo "mushroom" Quesadilla At Ernesto's used to be good but It has been a while since I have been due to their inconsistency issues when they franchised.

Oh Yeah, Fantasia is really good on mushrooms!

Another vote for Equus' Mushroom Fume. It's on my list of the five best foods I've ever eaten.

The Moraccan Mushroom Soup at Baxter Station is a long-time favorite.

The Portabella Napolean Sandwich at Third Ave. Cafe is really good if a little messy to eat. The menu description: A marinated portabella mushroom cap grilled and layered with feta cheese and roasted vegetables. All served on homade foccacia with roasted red pepper aioli, lettuce, tomato, and red onion.

We frequently make mushroom burgers using grilled Portabella caps. Top them with some melted provolone cheese, carmelized onions, a great tomato slice and whatever else sounds good at the time. I dip them into Dijon mustard.

Le Gallo Rosso's Gorgonzola Mushroom pasta dish. Just had it again last night, and am ready to heat up my leftovers for lunch. So, so good. The nuttiness of the mushrooms goes so well with that pungent gorgonzola.

I will also second the Moroccan mushroom soup at Baxter Station.
