Jack's Lounge

by JustinHammond » Thu Jul 30, 2009 8:47 pm

The wife and I finally made it to Jack's Lounge and I am sad to say we were somewhat disappointed. When we arrived we were promptly seated in the area between Equus and the original Jack's Lounge. We then sat and tried to figure out the protocol of the place. We sat for about 5 minutes without seeing another employee of Jack's.(The place was practically empty) I then noticed drink and food menus laying on a table next to us and thought maybe we "lounged" until ready to order at the bar. We looked over the menu for about 5 minutes and then finally decided to ask someone what was going on. We ask the bartender if we were suppose to order from him and the matride(?) overheard and immediately took charge. He apologized repeatedly, grabbed us a server and comped our first round of drinks. Problem solved. From there on out the service was fine.

On to the food. We weren't starving so we decided on two appetizers, an entree, and dessert.

Drinks:

Draft Newcastle: Cold, fresh, and delicious

Pineapple Martini: Stiff and delicious

The draft lineup is nothing to right home about. More on that later.

Rating 9/10

Damn good, but not spectacular.

Deano's Ultimate Nachos
Tortilla Chips, Beef, Cheese, Guacamole,
Sour Cream, Jack's Hot Sauce, Jalapeño - $7.75

Rating 7/10

Run of the mill mac and cheese with shrimp on top. No trace of truffle oil.

Rock Shrimp Mac and Cheese
Macaroni, Rock Shrimp, Four Cheeses & Truffle Oil - $8

Rating 6.5/10

This was the greatest disappointment of our meal. The flavor of the pizza was pretty good 8/10, but the crust was horrible. It reminded me of the pre made crust that sits below the pizza kits in the supermarkets. It was dry and had no flavor at all. I would be shocked if it is made in house and doesn't come in frozen or pre-baked.

Beef tips with arugula and sun dried tomato pesto.
Daily Pizza Creation
Thin Crust, Fresh Mozzarella, Great Daily Toppings - $14.5

Rating 9/10

Fabulous dessert. The marshmallows and graham crackers are delicious. The only thing holding it back from a 10 was I thought the marshmallow could have been melted a tad more. I think it just had a once over with a torch.

S’more
House-made Marshmallows, Graham Crackers, and Chocolate Sauce - $8

Overall impression:

The food was just a tad on the mild/mellow side. No bold flavors coming from any of the dishes we tried. The draft list also lacked any interesting/challenging choices. My only theory for this is the clientele that was filling in Jack's as we were finishing our meal. I don't think we seen anyone under 60, with the majority of the patrons looking 70 or older. Maybe the menu has to lean towards the mellow side to satisfy the majority of the clientele. I don't know for sure. I don't know anything about running a restaurant, but the demographic I saw was considerably older and the food seemed to lean towards a older palate.

However, we will be back. Next on our list is the burger, brisket, and chocolate/woodford reserve ice cream.

Justin
First let me say that I am glad you made it and gave Jack's a try. I hope to see you again very soon.
Second- I was your server and I take full responsiility for not getting to you sooner. I offer no excuses since nothing I was doing should have kept me from watchng my tables and again I apologize. No guest should have to guess how a place works.
Third- it's a shame you couldn't stay a bit longer as the age demographic shifted dramatically- a table of 12 young women came in celebrating a 25th birthday. One of the things I most enjoy about Jack's is it's appeal to all age goups, and after a good many years in this business I can tell you that is quite rare.
I look forward to seeing you next time you are in- I promise to keep better watch.

The early confusion was not a big deal at all. The pizza is where the meal really fell short. We love pizza and the crust was just a downer. We will be back and I'll be asking for Gary to take care of us.

I just wanted to say, It's very good to see you post Amy. I've been sparse posting this spring/summer myself and may have just missed you.

Sure enjoyed your Bourbon's Bistro posts which got me to finally try them. :)

Bravo to Gary as well. He's always a 1st stringer.

Very good review Justin. These are the kind that help us know what to expect and give our restaurants quality feedback.

Oh...just saw you're in Chicago Amy. Pretty good reason for me missing your input.

Thanks, Tom! I've been lurking some lately. And I come into town regularly, so I hope to start posting more again now that I have a few seconds of free time. Glad you tried Bourbon's Bistro and liked it! It's still one of my Louisville favorites.

Next time, definitely try the crab cakes. You can't beat Dean's crab cakes.

I'll take issue with the crab cakes. I had them at a dinner meeting at Equus about 3 weeks ago...while not bad the mushy texture struck me as a frozen product. Again they were ok but nothing to single out and I've had better here in town- I say that as a total fan of the place BTW.

We stopped back in for drinks and dessert last night and the S'more is now a 10/10. If you haven't tried this dessert yet, make your way to Jack's asap.

We had excellent service, but the demo was still in the older range. We were the youngest people by 30 years. We also had the worst car in the parking lot.

Haha. I'm a "drive it till it dies" kind of guy, so I know the feeling. My 12 year old Nissan is 9 times out of 10 the worst car in most restaurant parking lots we frequent.

I especially love having it valet parked.

My curiosity's been tweaked. Did you ever post "more" about the beer list? I searched and didn't see it.

I'll put the beer list at terrible.

I didn't ask about bottles, as I prefer draft. I doubt the bottle selection would be much better than the draft. As I have said before, the demo is very "mature". I didn't see any one else drinking beer. I heard lots of liquor and tonic being ordered.

The draft "list":

Bud American Ale
Stella
Newcastle
Miller Lite? There were 4 on the list, I think the last was Miller.

Newcastle is fine, it went well with the S'more.

Are you still pouring the beer made from Knobs Hops? I thinking about stopping by around 4:30 to try one out.

When did you start fearing the anti-free-thought police? This seems out of character for you. Resist!
