Tacoma & Seattle, WA

by Bobby R. » Mon May 21, 2007 5:28 pm

I am traveling in 2 weeks in the Tacoma and Seattle, Washington areas. Does anybody have any dining recommendations? Unfortunately, it is a mid-week trip. Any insight is appreciated!

If you are in the mood for a great steak head over to The Metropolitan Grill on South 2nd Street in Seattle. Mid-week is perfect as they get crammed on the weekends. You can go for the full monty treatment or find some great food and drink bargains (relative) during happy hour in the bar from 3:00-6:00 P.M. At one time the Met Bar had the largest collection of Kentucky bourbon and Tennessee sour mash in the world. In my Top 5 steak experiences of all time.

Wild Ginger in Seattle. It's close to the waterfront (3rd Avenue) I haven't actually been, but I have a friend who works there. She used to be a big Louisville "foodie" and says the food is incredible. If you go, ask for Lindsey to be your server!

Flying Fish

by David Lange » Mon May 21, 2007 6:29 pm

2 restaurants we enjoyed last year in Seattle besides Wild Ginger( which was outstanding) were Flying Fish and Painted Table. Both were great and I think you'd enjoy them. A great place for breakfast is Julia's at Wallingford. It's a little tricky to find but a real hidden jewel Check out http://www.flyingfishrestaurant.com

Hope you have a great trip.

I second the motion on Metropolitan Grill. I've been to it on every visit I've made to Seattle and I've never been disappointed. Every one can find an item they like on the menu and the prices aren't bad by big city prices.

Another favorite spot is The Salish Lodge in Snoqualmie, WA. It is just 34 miles from Sea-Tac Airport East on I-90. The Attic Bistro has excellent fare and the views of the Cascades are incredible. You can also get a table looking out over Snoqualmie Falls. Alder wood smoke salmon is a must.

Go to Joey's Mediterranean Grill. It is a great concept and a beautiful place to eat. It is on Lake Union and you can dine outside and watch the seaplanes take off and all the beautiful yachts in the harbor. The chef Chris Mills was recently at the james beard house. The menu is very affordable and a great experience. http://www.joeysmedgrill.com
I am a recent transplant from the NW and it was always one of my favorite places to eat.
Also next door is Daniels Broiler for a steak that is far better than Metropolitan Grill in my opinion.

If your looking for a great lunch spot, try Honey HOle Saldwichs on Pike St. http://www.thehoneyhole.com cool atmosphere and great sandwich's

I agree with the suggestion of Wild Ginger. We used to live in the Northwest and travel over to Seattle. The hotfish (spicy) was AMAZING! You shouldn't miss the opportunity to dine there! Enjoy!

We just got back from an Alaskan cruise that sailed out of Seattle, and when we got back, we spent the day. I had written down everyone's suggestions before we left, but we didn't make it to any of them. We munched through Pike Place Market for brunch, had a small lunch at Lowell's in the market, with great views of the water, and then wandered around all afternoon.

It being a Sunday, the chili place in the market was closed (has anyone been there? everything I read about it said it was amazing), and us just having finished a cruise, we were feeling poor and exhausted. So we ended up at Red Robin on the waterfront for an early dinner. I haven't been to one of those in a while, not since I lived in Maryland, but it was a good, inexpensive dinner. My only regret is not getting to try more Seattle food. Oh well, next time...

If you're up for something downscale, try Two Bells Tavern on 4th Avenue. It has a casual, pub-like feel, HUGE burgers (my wife and I each had one for lunch and didn't need dinner that night), and very non-touristy. If you're a beer drinker, try the Mack and Jack's African Amber Ale. I wish I could get that around here.

I have no idea the name but the location is unforgetable -- lunch at the top of the Space Needle.

My husband and I went out there a few years ago and did the sight-seeing thing. We purchased a package that provided valet parking for the tower, a ride to the top, and then we had to eat a meal up there. I don't remember much of what we had but do remember a seared ahi tuna and wasabi mashed potatoes and they were wonderful. The restaurant revolves so the view is really nice.
