favorite taquerias on Preston?

by John Hagan » Thu Jul 30, 2009 10:57 am

On occasion I do some work with a guy who has a place on Preston near Fern Valley rd. I see quite a few places the look interesting. Anybody have any thoughts on where to stop for good tacos? We went into a place in front of the Unique Thrift yesterday and found some good tacos, but I cant remember the name. Im not sure it had a name now that I think about it. I was looking for a place that I thought was called Lolitas, but I didnt see it anywhere.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

John, try Rosticeria Luna, east side of Preston in a little Latino strip center a block or so south of Gilmore Lane. It's outstanding. I also like La Tapatia, farther out Preston at Blue Lick, a block or so south of Outer Loop.

Lolita's is not exactly a taqueria but a Los Angeles-style burrito joint. It's good, but not on Preston - it's on the west side of Poplar Level a block or so north of the Watterson.

I am a big fan of the Unique Thrift store Taqueria. I believe it is called La Favorita, the same name as the grocery next door. I always get the burrito al carbon w/beans and it is awesome especially with that green sauce that I still can't figure what it is but it is spicy! Their Lingua tacos are also good. Yummy Horchata to drink as well ! If your feeling more adventureous La Tropicana grocery has a Taqueria tucked inside as well as La supermercato in the same shopping center as Koreana 2. The food is about the same but lets just say the atmosphere is more adventureous. Also La Torta Loca right next door to Luna's and La Tropicana is great. They have this thing called a Zapato or something that is supposed to resemble a "sandal". It is like an elongated polenta cake with creamy beans queso fresca and your choice of meat. Awesome! It's all good compared to La Tumbleweeds Ketchuppy salsa, bagged tortilla chips, kool-aid margaritas...ick! It's like a mexican Denny's :!:

lolita's is pretty much the first business on the left past the watterson (going north on poplar level). it's right next to the baseball field. it's within walking distance of my house. i love it! 99 cent tacos after 5pm, too!

Just ate there today - we took the International Cuisine students on a field trip to the Asian and Latino groceries out Iriquois Manor way and over by Gilmore. The students were headed for the Vietnamese grocery in that shopping center, but I made a beeline for the taqueria around the corner. Heaven! One carne asada and one pastor taco, tons of onions and fresh cilantro....ahhhhhhhh.

Marsh, another good one to check out is the one thats in the meat store at the intersection of Gillmore and Preston, set back in the mall a bit.. I cant remember the name. I think the tacos there are on par with, and can be better on occasion than La Tapatia(pretty much my fav in that area). Get the Lomo if you go. They also have good tamales often.

Wait...I think I WAS at the one inside the meat store. This was definitely inside a grocery, a little sectioned-off section of the store, with a bar with stools overlooking the prep area, and three or four "booths"... I couldn't tell what the name of the place was, I just assumed it was the same because it's right there in the strip mall around the corner from the Asian grocery...

Ok, It just came to me...I think its called La Rosita carnacita. Your description sounds like the same place. I know there was a thread about it once, called something like My secret Taco spot. I searched ,but could not find it.
PS I didnt mean to call you "Marsh",just a typo. Ill stick to referring to you as Lynch from now on.
