Homegrown maters

by Steve R » Tue Jul 28, 2009 7:57 pm

I know tomatoes are coming in by the motherlode right now and was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a good roadside tomato stand. I know I can go to the farmers market and pay through the nose for heirloom organics but I am just talkin bout miracle grown big boy whoppers outta grampa's garden. You know the kinda stand that when he ain't out there you can just grab your own and pay with the honor system kinda thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated for I have BLT on the brain. :?:

There's also a combination garden shop, produce stand on Taylorsville road in a little bit from Kroger on the same side of the road. Haven't been there this year but in the past they've had some very nice produce.

Steve,

There is one at or about 322 Ridgeway Ave...which is where Westport crosses the RR tracks...go straight on your left about a block up.

Can you wait until Saturday? You can back up your truck and fill it up at either the Bardstown or Beargrass farmers' markets.

Our garden is full, and I mean full of . . . green tomatoes. I want a nice big red tomato.

Are they in a very shady location? It's really odd that you're not getting red tomatoes this late. We got our first in the last week of June, and they were coming on like crazy by July 4.

Other than our yellow cherry tomatoes, we are full of green tomatoes as well. We did get a bit of a late start this year, but they get plenty of sun. I just chalked it up to a cooler, wetter summer?!?

We are blaming the cooler, wetter weather as well. We have tomatoes in 3 different locatins, all get plenty of sun. We must have 14 plants. Eggplants are producing as are the peppers, but the tomatoes are just on strike or something.

(he is there 7 days a week) :)

Annemarie - do you know what hours they're usually there?

I go here alot because it's in the back of my neighborhood. Nice produce. Usually has cucumbers, squash and zuccini as well, all for $1.50 a lb. Much cheaper than the farmer's markets!
