Old School

by Steve P » Sun Jul 26, 2009 5:06 pm

OK...so we're into "old school". Old music, Sunday drives, picnics in the park...that sort of stuff. So with that in mind are there any places within a nice Sunday drive that any of you long term residents can recommend ? Root Beer Stand "Drive Ins" (PLEASE don't tell me Sonic...gag me with a spoon), ice cream stands, drive-in theaters, etc, etc. Not that we live in the past but we do like to visit it every now and then :P

BTW, on a related note we're decorating our bar in kind of a late 20th century "pop-culture" motif...If any of you have old stuff (old albums, lighting, posters, ticket stubs, etc) collecting dust in the basement drop me a PM. We're always in the market for interesting pieces.

Steve, i am the same way. i love doing all those things, it is very ...jeez, the word escapes me....ummm.....GROUNDING! There we go! Well for me it is.

Anyway, you should try Mom and Pops Ice cream Stand in New Albany. You stand around, order your ice cream, which is actually very good, and then sit at a bench and just enjoy the evening. It is really nice, we treat our children to that.

Have you every taken a drive out to Red River Gorge? My husband and i went out there before the two babies came along and had a wonderful time. It is a beautiful drive, and almost romantic in a way. We took a cooler, packed fruit and stuff to drink, he took his camera, it was an awesome time. And the Gorge itself is breathtaking.....

that's all i got for now......

If you head up to Nashville IN, there are some fun B&B's around (hot tubs et al), and old-timey restaurants and entertainment . . . nothing like a dinner at one of the downtown restaurants (last changed menu's in 1932), and then over to the Nashville Opry for entertainment, then back to the hotel for a hot tub with your SO. Great weekend!

Hey !...Thanks Andrew. We WILL be giving this a try. I've been out of town for a couple of weeks, so this will likely be a "sooner" rather "later" trip with the S.O.

Don't forget about Polly Freeze....You can take several "back roads" to get there if you like steep windy roads!

While my daughter was growing up we did a great number of 1 day road trips on weekends. Our favorite was to Bernheim Forrest. Easy drive to/back in one day. Beautiful grounds and recently (within the last 5 years or so) redone. It has some great trails for hiking at different skill levels. We loved the artwork dispensed around the grounds. Sarah still talks about those trips.

Um, well, I've never been to this place, but I'm intrigued.

I play golf often at Quail Chase (65 South to Snyder East to Smyrna Rd. exit, then left on Cooper Chapel Rd.). On the corner of Smyrna Rd. and Cooper Chapel Rd. is this rootbeer/food stand shaped like a giant red barrel. I'm usually either running late for a tee time or exhausted after playing, and so have never stopped, but the place has always intrigued me.

Wow. Another topic I feel comfortable with!

About 30 minutes west of Louisville in Milltown, IN is Blue River Cafe. Decent food, good service, excellent spirits menu for the locale and some very good entertainment on Friday & Saturday nites. This week is Tyrone Cotton (original Blues) Friday nite and Lick Creek Band (60's rock/pop) Saturday nite.

Here's a link that has directions and menus. http://www.bluerivercafe.com/

Dan's suggestion of Polly's Freeze has my second.

If you've not been to Westport General Store I'd try that direction as well for a more upscale dinner. Good entertainment too.

Rock On :!:

Tom (and Dan),

Polly Freeze ?

The Blue River looks/sounds intriguing (provided I can get Becky to volunteer to "DD").

I've been to to Westport several times but Will keeps dodging me by being out of town each time I go. It's starting to hurt my wittle feewings.
