New Pizza Joint spotted under construction in the Highlands

by Marsha L. » Sat Jul 25, 2009 1:01 pm

John and Laura Thompson and I shepherded some of the students from the Basic Skills classes at Sullivan on a little field trip in the Highlands today (Farmer's Market, Coco's, Ray's Monkey House, Kizito Cookies, etc.) As we were walking, Laura and I noticed the place near Eastern Parkway that had been a hubcap/rim shop for years had been cleared out. The door was open, and we spied what was obviously an order counter in the rear of the space, so we barged in and asked if it was going to be a restaurant.

It is! It's going to be called "Pizza Roma", and they will be delivering. Hopefully another good place to get pizza in the Highlands! Now we'll have Cafe Lou Lou, Bearno's, Wick's, Boombozz, Za's and Pizza Roma, all within walking distance! The gentleman we spoke to said they plan to open some time in August. I'll try to stay abreast of developments and give an update with the actual opening date later.

Did he happen to mention anything about the style of pizza they'll be making?

Any new news on Pizza Roma? It's right around the corner from us. My husband drove by yesterday & said that it looked like they are getting close to opening. But there was also one of those big orange "stop work" stickers posted. So they may have hit a delay.

I was walking around Bardstown Road this weekend, and the new Pizza Roma place looks to be open for business. Has anybody had a chance to check it out yet? It looks very cute from the outside.

Dude, they're all 17 and up - it's an accredited university. We even offer a dang ol' MBA degree.

BTW, you forgot to mention Ray's pizza, he'll be hurt.

I'd have been glad to mention Ray's, but I'm pretty sure Nimbus wasn't serving pizza yet when I started this thread.

Hmmmmm...oooops...guess I didn't look at the date. Sorry Dudette. BTW, if you didn't get a burner for your chili yet I'm here for you. The weather forecast kind of chased us off. Let me know if ya need it.

Apparently a truck crashed into it while they were building the place! I think I will try this place Wed. if they are open...hopefully it is cheaper than Qdoba...$9 for a burrito and drink? The Ancho BBQ pork burrito does remind me a bit of my favorite sandwich from Thatsa Wrapp, though not nearly as good.

I am pretty sure it is open and has been for a couple of weeks... Although I drive by there daily and have never seen anyone in there. Has anyone tried it yet?

Well, I went and they were not open yet. They open tomorrow (Friday, 10/09). I got a paper menu, and the selection looks basic yet good- pizza, pastas, subs, salads. It's not "gourmet" like Boombozz, but then again, what other pizza is like Boombozz? The menu reminds me of Bearno's.

Pastas are $8.50 (lasagna, ravioli, spaghetti) and pizza by the slice is from $4.38 (cheese) to $6.06 (Highlander- pretty much every topping, plus you can request anchovies). I don't know how large a slice is, but it is half the price of the 10 inch. Pizza is also available in 14, 16, and 18 inch crust (original, super thick, or thin).

Their meatball hoagie ($7.05) looks good, especially with the addition of green peppers and garlic butter. (Wow, now I am wanting a Cafe Lou Lou meatball sandwich for dinner!) An interesting sub, which must be a knife-and-fork affair, is spaghetti and meatball. Yes, you heard that right! Fleet Feet is right across the street, so I wonder if that will be popular?

They also have a lunch buffet, Mon.-Fri. 11-2, $7.95 all you can eat.

Looking forward to trying it!

I still am hoping that someone will put their neck on the block and open a good wood oven pie Neopolitan style. I've found them in many places; even Lexington has 2 good ones (Smashing Tomato)

There was an excellent, reasonable place in St. Louis and they were always busy. I have had the Boombozz rendition and while it's good, it's not the flash fired, hand tossed, fresh buffalo mozza and fresh basil that I'm craving. We certainly aren't lacking for authenticity in other cuisines here.
