downtown bars to take guest to

by Matthew D » Tue Jul 21, 2009 10:53 am

I'll be hosting a friend on Friday night who will be staying at the Galt House. I'm looking for suggestions for downtown drinking spots to take this guest to. He'll be having dinner at the rehearsal dinner, so probably no need to consider food.

I'm thinking we'll be probably be skipping on beer, which is my usual go-to selection (and leads me mostly to BBC on Fourth). So, where are interesting bars to get a good mixed drink? I've already thought of Z's Fusion, Proof, and the bar in the Seelbach (name?). I'm not interested in 4th Street Live. I know I could make a night out of the places I just listed, but I'm wondering what I am overlooking or am not aware of, as I don't drink downtown often.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

If you're wanting to hop around downtown proper, a trio of Proof, Z's Fusion, and the Old Seelbach Bar (and maybe the new wine bar) would be great.

The bar at Jeff Ruby's can be fun, and the bar in Rivue on top of the Galt House is pretty swank with great views, though small.

A little further, you might consider 732 Social, who now stays open until 3am on the weekends (kitchen until 2am) and has a nice but small outside seating area. Close to that would also be the bar or the patio at White Oak, with live music on the weekends on the patio.

Those would be among my top choices. Isn't there also an excellent bar with a superior Bourbon selection within the Galt House complex?

Ah yes, Jockey Silks Bourbon Bar. If I rememer correctly, it's sort of Oak Room-esqe, dark paneling, dark, etc.

The bar in the atrium is also kind of cool - a little pricey, but nice views of the river on one side and downtown on the other.

My vote would be new wine bar in the Seelbach, ending with the Old Seelbach Bar downstairs with live jazz. Complimentary valet parking!
But that's just me.

I'm not sure of the new wine bar, but I do see us having a drink at the Old Bar. As the guest was my undergrad English mentor, it seems only right to drink at the hotel mentioned in Gatsby.
