Sapporo opening at Theater Square

by Brad Keeton » Tue Jul 21, 2009 10:52 am

I just read in the current Business First of Louisville that Sapporo will open a second location downtown at Theater Square (4th St. close to Broadway, near the Brown Hotel) in the old Kilimanjaro location (current tenant Safier Mediterranean Deli moving to Bardstown Road). There is no start date for construction, but the owner hopes to have it open in October.

Add to that the Marketplace upscale grocery opening in September that is slated to have a restaurant and wine shop and current tenant Theater Square Wine & Spirits, and things are looking up in that corridor.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Safier in a storefront a few doors north of the old Kiliminjaro/new Sapporo location?

Also see this brief thread from June 12, also touching on the Sapporo entry ...

Robin,

According to the article the spaces housing Kiliminjaro, Songs of Seba, Safier, and the Watch Shop are all part of the "Kiliminjaro buildings," and as far as I can tell at least Songs of Seba and Safier are moving to Bardstown Road. It sounds like Sapporo will take over most of those spaces.

I just called Safier, they said they were not moving from their location. I'd be surprised if they did. I work close by and they do a healthy lunch business.

Nice work. I re-read the article, and I misstated it. It is a bit misleading. Under the section titled "Shop relocates to Highlands," it immediately discusses and quotes Rehen al-Hadad, the owner of Safier. At the bottom of that section, it states that Songs of Seba is moving to the Highlands.

My bad, but the article could have been a little more clear. It also appears that The Watch Shop is not moving.

Does anyone know what happened to the now eyesore on 4th and Chestnut that was supposed to be another Japanese place (in addition to 3 others within 2-3 blocks)?
