Q: Lamb and Duck North of the River??

by Bill P » Mon Jul 20, 2009 1:13 pm

I'm new to the area and looking for suggestions on where to purchase fresh lamb and/or duck in Floyd or Harrison Counties? Farmer/Producer===>Consumer would be ideal.
TIA

Bill, I can't help you with Floyd or Harrison, although other Hoosier folks may be able to point you to something hyper-local.

Here's a great farm near Bloomington that has both, though:

It might be closer for you to drop in to Louisville on a Saturday morning and hit either the Bardstown Road or Beargrass (St. Matthews) farmers' markets. You can generally find lamb, and I saw one place at Bardstown - in fact, I think it was the Schachts - that had duck last weekend.

In Clark County, give the guys at Preferred Meats a call. They are on Highway 60, just south of Charlestown Road. They get all their meat from the own farms near Paoli. No steroids, no hormones, no anti-biotics, etc. Their pricing is right there with the grocery stores as well. (812) 246-5930

I LOVE Preferred Meats, but I believe it's only their own pork and beef that they sell. The lamb, I believe (as well as the chicken) is other natural product, usually sold frozen. I haven't seen duck there.

I've occasionally seen lamb at the New Albany Farmers Market, from the Gehman family I think. The market is downtown on the corner of Bank and East Market Streets.

NA Farmers Market on Facebook

NA Farmers Market Web Site

It's worth a shot. Lots of other good stuff, too - beef, eggs, goat cheese, bread, coffee, veggies.
