Give me some great lunch spots, please.

by Damon M Barnes » Wed Jul 15, 2009 10:37 am

I work close to the Watterson right off of Newburg. I have already tried Chez Seneba which is easily the most interesting lunch spot near me. Does anyone else have some good suggestions. I can reasonably eat anywhere right off the Watterson within a few exits or in the Highlands (though if they are closer to the original Highlands I'll probably save them for supper). I'm also sure there are other areas such as Hikes that I can get to rather quickly too. I"m looking for great food and a good deal.

Thanks.

First obvious pick in your immediate neighborhood: Lee's Korean, in the office building that backs up to the Watterson on Bishop Lane (?) just EAST of Newburg Road. The city's first Korean restaurant and still one of its best.

Or shoot out Newburg to Old Shepherdsville Road to Ole Hickory Pit barbecue - decent 'que, and one of the few places in town where you can get (if you like) Western Kentucky-style mutton. The family that operates this place is related to an old-time favorite BBQ joint in Paducah.

I'm not very familiar with Korean food but from Marty's review in the CJ it seems that a lot of the dishes at Lee's are designed for large parties. I will be dining solo...is there still a good selection of food to be had for the solo diner?

Damon, sure. Think of it as any other Asian restaurant: They sell food in individual orders. If you and a bunch of friends go out to a Chinese (or Korean) restaurant you can order a bunch of different dishes and share. But it's still entirely possible to go by yourself and order one good dish. Lots of 'em at Lee's. It's hard to go wrong, the menu explains the dishes in English, and the staff speaks English well. Bottom line, if you would go to a Chinese restaurant solo, you can go to a Korean restaurant solo. But it's fun, too, to round up some pals and try more variety.

Cool deal. I may try to wait for one evening when I can have a bigger group so we can sample more stuff. Though I have no issues dining virtually anywhere solo.

The main reason I was asking is Marty listed several items with a price tag of $30+!!!!!!!

I don't think that would be typical of Lee's. Frankly, I don't recall Marty's review now ... with the SCENE looking more and more like an ad supplement in the incredible shrinking CJ, I sometimes forget to open it on Saturday mornings. :(

Lolita's tacos on Poplar level right off the watterson on the left. The taquitos are good and anything with carnitas. If you are feeling adventureous try the tamale burrito.
There is also Frolios pizza a bit farther down the road on the right. I think they have a lunch buffet.

In the other tower (the tallest one), across from the tower that Lee's is in, is a place called Cafe Montegu. Good prices, good specials, fresh stuff. Lunch and breakfast only.

I go Lee's sometimes when the lady of the house is gone. Sandy hates Korean places. I've never been for lunch but it would be difficult to spend 30 dollars at dinner and I assume lunch would be cheaper.

Sort of difficult to find if you are not familiar with it. Go past the Ramada and turn left. It has a separate
entrance in the office building.

the bakery, across from sullivan university has delicious sandwiches and bite size sweets and pastries that won't weigh you down in the middle of your day.

a block or so north from there, on the opposite side of btown rd is the bambi bar. they have an awesome club sandwich and fish sandwich. if i were you though, i'd go for the bambi burger. it has never disappointed me.

also, i second the other poster's suggestion about lolita's and frolio's. i like the taco salad or the deluxe burrito at lolita's. both are in the $6 or $7 range and are actually large enough to split, which is great if you're on a budget or a diet. just bring your own soda. i find that theirs are a tad pricey and they charge for refills. frolio's has a good toasted ravioli appetizer. i'm also a fan of their spaghetti and meatballs. haven't tried their pizza (but you know what they say about pizza...)

what type of place is Lolita's that you can bring your own soda in? I will have to google that place, my husband likes burritos.

Becky, you and your family will love Lolita's - they have ice cream novelties treats for the kids, too. John and I used to live near there and we visited weekly. Juan is the proprieter, and he is the man. Quesadillas or "pizzadillas" for the kids, and carnitas and burritos for you and the hubby. Tell Juan I said hello. A few tables are inside and they have picnic tables outside by the softball field for al fresco dining.

Went there today. Very good 'que and nicely priced. Thanks for the recommendation.
