Is the Delta Lounge downtown a lunch venue?

by Sally M » Fri May 18, 2007 10:28 am

We're always looking for new places to try for lunch. What about Delta Lounge, which seems to have been downtown forever?

Is it a lunch spot for downtown workers? Or is it a hole-in-the-wall bar where people go for drinks after work?

Please advise-thanks!

Yes and no, Sally. In its heyday it had some passable tex-mex fare. A 3 alarm fire marked the end of the old Delta. Nowdays it is more of an after work watering hole for court workers and such. They still serve food but have never heard anything good about it since the fire.

I used to eat lunch there a lot. Tex-Mex fare along the lines of what you used to get at the old Tumbleweed on Mellwod before it went corporate. Plus, it has sandwiches like fried fish, club, chicken salad, some decent burgers and usually a special of the day that is a homecooked meat 'n three style combination. I have always liked the club sandwich.

The Delta is definitely a lunch spot. You need to get there by 11:30 or there will be a line to get in. Now, is it a healthy lunch spot? No. Is it a trendy place? No. It is pretty much an old-fashioned "clubby" place. You can get a sandwich, which comes with chips and a pickle. But, it's just a regular sandwich like you would make at home (which isn't a bad thing, just something you should know). Their hot ham and cheese on a bun is pretty good, or they have a grilled ham and swiss that I like. They also have pretty good chili (with or without spagetti). They have a tuna salad plate, chicken salad plate, etc. Plus, hot specials every day like meatloaf or pork roast, etc. And, then, they have a Mexican section on their menu (but I don't really recommend it).
I would say it is pretty much like cafeteria food or home cooking. Nothing spectacular, but not bad either. Plus, it is pretty cheap, especially for downtown lunch food. You can definitely eat there for under $10.

I haven't been there in awhile. But when I worked downtown, I used to eat lunch there pretty frequently. I really liked the atmosphere. I agree with Ellen that the food isn't spectacular, but it's decent. Sandwiches are pretty good and it's fairly inexpensive. It used to be quite crowded at lunchtime, I don't know if this has changed since my last visit.
