I want to become a regular .....

by Becky M » Mon Jul 13, 2009 6:30 pm

My oldest daughter is going to have an activity every Tuesday evening from now on. My other daughter who is not old enough for the church youth group will not. I would like to find a place that i can have dinner at every Tuesday night and become a regular there. I will be with my husband, 11 yr old daughter, 2 yr old son, and 8 month old baby. So of course i am looking for a family type place. Why do i want to be a regular? I want to go somewhere that we can be used to, where the kids can be comfortable at. Hopefully we can find something affordable as well. What is affordable to me, i would say about $10 and under. My 11 yr old can still eat off of most kid menus for the next year or so, and my 2 yr old can as well. Alcoholic beverages are not important, as we do not drink in our family. Also not a loud place, the bar type places tend to be too loud for the babies.

Now, does anyone know of this perfect haven? :) :) :)

What part of town are you considering?

A few places that immediately come to mind are:
Cafe Lou Lou
Shiraz
Any of the many TexMex joints, like Sol Aztecas.

All are pretty kid friendly, IMHO.

I'm sorry, i completely forgot to mention the area. It is Hikes Point i believe, i know the Chili's on Hikes Lane is VERY near my church.

and....i really don't want Chili's to be the regular place.....i kind of wanted to get to know a local restaurant....

You could try Maggie's on Taylorsville Rd. It's on the left before you go up the hill into the "Heart of J-Town".
It's a very nice place with what I would describe as a local version of "Chain Type Cuisine" in a much better setting. Very reasonable with decent service and pretty good eats!

Maggies is not too bad. I go once in a while for lunch because I work in J-town. There are a few dishes under $10 and they have a Kid's menu too.

Browns Lane from Hikes Point to St. Matthews is just a couple of miles and at the end of the drive you'll find Cafe Lou Lou.

Thanks, i am going to run these by my husband and see what he says. I have never heard of Maggies or El Reys, but my husband might opt for El Rey's, he likes Mexican.....

If you like Middle Eastern, Al-Watan is in the Hikes Lane area, and has IMHO, the best MIddle Eastern food in Louisville. Little storefront, not crowded, no alcohol, affordable.

Does Al-Wathen have tables or is it just carry-out?

They have 2 or 3 tables. GREAT food. They do close at 9.

El Rey's is right next to the fire station on Hikes Lane, they're open until 10 and they have a patio area.

Al Watan does have table service, and the food is truly excellent.
I've been there with my kids, and they liked it, but it won't be for every Louisville family because of the ambiance. I didn't get a lot of details from the original post, but it seems as if a comfortable ambiance is important, and though I'd prefer Al Watan to a typical "family" type restaurant, I'm not sure that's true of this poster.

If you like Mexican, then there's another place that's been described as one of the best in Louisville (personal opinion by persons).

El Torro
1850 S Hurstbourne Pkwy
491-7272

It's in the same shopping center as Shalimar and Shoe Carnival.

i have never heard of Al-Watan. I was thinking of indian last night as well... I do not know why i did not think of Dakshin, it is very close to my church. Just a few minutes down the road. I have never eaten there and from the reviews, i think it would be too spicy for my children. My husband and i would love it, but i am afraid it is not suitable for the kids.

What is "the ambiance" at Al-Watan since a couple have noted about it?

El Torro being on Hurstbourne, don't know if that is too out of our way. I am not from Louisville so will have to google and see the distance from my church. My husband did seem to be leaning towards Mexican yesterday when i ran some by him.
